The ball seal has started to leak so I took off the bowl. Although the seal looks fine I found that a thin rough hard "crud" had formed on the sealing surface. Once I scraped it off and reassembled the seal works great. Is there something I should be routinely coating the ball and seal with to avoid this ?

I use pure silicon grease. It not only lubricates and prevents build up of gunk, it seals as well. Make sure you keep the clamp properly torqued to 60 INCH, I say again INCH pounds

When we got our boat we received a couple of wooden sticks (they looked like large popsickle sticks) included in the vacuflush materials. One side of the stick was coated with what my wife (she used the stick) calls a velcro type of material. She merely ran the stick around the ball to cure a leak that developed.
