Vacuflush Flush pedal goes down too far.

I have an old Vacu-Flush head on my boat (It's so old it's a Mansfield), that I retrofitted with the current style water valve and pedal. Previously it had an electric solenoid that opened when the pedal was depressed. The new pedal, however, goes down too far when pressed, to a point where the part that activates the water valve will rotate off the plunger for the valve, then, when the pedal is returned, it will hit the plunger and pop it off the valve.

To avoid this, I have to be conscious of how far I push down the pedal and in order to keep it from coming off the plunger, I can't push it down far enough to fully open the flush ball in the bottom of the bowl.

Normally on a vacu-flush, I can simply push the pedal till it stops and I have no problem, but the other ones I've used don't push down this far.

I have included some photos (sorry for the cell phone quality) of the setup to help envision the problem. I have more photos on the way of the pedal in the down position, but for now, this is what i have. I took the pedal cover off for the photos, but it doesn't make a difference on or off.

Any recommendations on what I can do here? thanks.

My guess is the old pedal is not happy with the new valve. Can you just make some kind of stop for the pedal?

The pedal is also brand new. The old pedal wouldnt work in this case because it was designed to close an electrical circuit to open a solenoid, rather than depress a plunger.

What would normally stop the pedal from going down too far?

there is a stop built into the return cartridge you will need a new type return cartridge.that is the part that fits under the water valve any vacuflush dealer can help you out with the parts.good luck it's not a big deal to replace

Put a small block under the pedal to stop it from going to far.

I modified the pedal (bent it the other way) so it hits the pedestal before coming off the water valve. Problem solved, but the pedal's a bit uglier than when it started.

Glad you were able to solve the problem. Your pics were so dark that you couldn't really tell what was what. 'Pears to me (based on the pictures) that the head is pretty old.

Yeah it's old, it's a Mansfield, but until now, these old heads have been taking brand new V-Flush parts with no problem(Cheers to SeaLand/Dometic for keeping the parts interchangeable). Sorry about the photos, I was trying to show that the pedal had nothing to stop it from going down too far. I had other photos taken, but couldn't get them downloaded off the camera. I just took a cue from another head on board that uses the pedestal as a stop and modified this pedal. I guess either the new pedal has to be combined with a new style spring cartridge with a stop, or the pedestals were re-designed. Regardless, it works, the pedal's a bit uglier, but the price for the repair was right! Thanks all.
