[Good Grief]

When it rains, it pours.

So, after fireworks a few weeks ago, while transiting home in the dark, hit something. Dinged the bow pretty good, and whatever it was rode down the stbd side of keel, chipping a chine or two on the way. Hauled the boat for the fiberglass repair.

Get a call this past Wed that the repairs are done, ready to splash. Stop at the marina Friday last to arrange splash on Monday (today.)

Stop at boat yesterday to give a once over, charge batteries, set lines, etc. for launch. Get on boat, and below cockpit cover is filthy, and keys are missing (cabin and ignition on one ring), and cabin is locked. So, call fiberglass repair guy and complain on the mess, and ask about the keys - he says his guys weren't on the boat, and never had keys. That sinking feeling sets in.

Open the cabin w/ LEO in tow - cabin trashed, laptop pc missing, forward Bomar hatch busted, burn marks in overhead. . .. needless to say, mess.

Q - as the keys are still missing, is it worth re-keying the cabin door and engines? I know most cabin locks aren't worth the metal they're made of, but thinking about piece-of-mind. Same w/ ignitions. Thoughts?

Sorry to hear this it's very upsetting to say the least. Not sure rekeying will help much but it may give you a little peace of mind.
I don't suppose the yard has cameras?

This just burns me. Mine was once broken in during the winter. The problem was they broke the door to get in. It's not what they steal as much as what they damage to get to it. If I were you, if the lock is rekey-able, I'd do it. However they probably found the keys and tossed them as far as possible for fun. I'd walk around the yard and see if you can locate them.

Me? I would not worry about changing anything. I would highly doubt they'll hit you again. Maybe don't leave tempting valuables aboard.

Thanks for the responses. Waiting on the insurance adjuster, won't be there till Thurs. He says we can't clean till then. Damn. Will probably pull the entire cabin door latch assembly off and have it re-keyed, once in the water (where it's apparently safer!) Gonna have to talk w/ a mechanic on whether the ignition cylinders are re-keyable, or cheaper to simply buy new w/ a different key (if even available).
