Greetings, friends. I've been offline for a while, as having started a new business has kept me just a bit busy. At least I did it in the Winter. Fortunately, I'm getting a bit of time now, and need to do a bit of maintenance.
I need to replace one of my antennae, as the cable inside the upper portion of the whip corroded and parted. I have a 13.5' base, with a 5' whip that screws to the top of that via a ferrule of sorts. Is it correct that I can simply relace the upper portion and thread the cable of the new antenna down thru the lower portion? I'm a bit concerned, as the cable seems to be hung up in the lower section, and I don't want to force it.
Also, is there any reason why I would not want to put an 8' whip up there, replacing the 5'? I have to lower it for bridges as it is now, so is there any downside to a taller unit?
I also see antennae rated at 3db, 6db, and 9db, and have no idea which to choose.
Finally, I've read that Digital is the best brand to buy. Any suggestions on locating one at a reasonable price? I can't seem to find one in Boatfix. West Marine does not carry the brand here in CT.
