I just bought a 1999 Four Winns Vista 258 with a 5.7L Volvo-Penta duo-prop powerplant.

When having the boat surveyed, my surveyor said the outdrive oil needed to be changed. I saw it when he pulled the dipstick, and its pretty black.

Question: The Volvo owners manual calls for a synthetic 75/80-90w gear lube. I wanted to go with Amsoil - they make a full synthetic marine extreme pressure 75w-90w.

However, when I went to my local auto parts store today, that has a marine lube section, they had Mobil 1 full synthetic 75-90w, but not for marine use. It was sitting right next to the non-synthetic marine gear lubes though. It was the only synthetic and I figured since they placed it there it was ok. But I wouldnt be here asking if I trusted everything I heard at the parts stores ;)

So can I use a full synthetic 75-90w that doesnt necessarily say "marine" on it??

If not, Im going with the Amsoil synthetic marine 75-90w. Just want to make sure (that drive is expen$ive to replace if i goof up!)
