Now that these have been around a while, I would love to hear from owners that have these pod drives. Are they worth the money?
Any regrets? Any reason not to buy?

I will throw my two cents in. I live on the upper Mississipi where we have short boating seasons. In the spring we have high water and fast moving current and the wind is always 12-15 mph coming out of the west. I had a great Searay 320 with stern drives and I was very proficient in using them to maneuver. But I was wise enough to know certain conditions would make it not worth the risk or effort to the boat or persons. So I started researching and traveled to Regal and Searay in florida for test drives. I met with Regal first and drove a 4060 with volvo IPS.To put it in a nutshell if you can play a video game ,you can maneuver this 20000 lb boat into tight quarters. I found taking it easy and not forcing the boat was the easiest way to handle it.It was a quiet system with little to no vibration. As far as forward facing props you are suppost to reap the rewards of clean water being grabbed by the props and pulled thru the water . This also helps with your hole shot. I did worry about the unprotected props, but If I am going to hit something with any drive system their will be damage and thats why I have insurance.I also do not try to put myself into compromising situations that would lead to ground strike. As far as fuel usage goes I get 1.15 mpg at 35 mpg and 3-4 mpg at displacement speeds. The system exhaust is thru the bottom of the system so its a couple of feet under the water and is a non event. The Searay uses Zeus system and is very similiar to IPS except that the props are traditional facing th stern and are recessed into a cavity several inches. The systems maneuver the same with the props rotating to the port or starboard approx 24 degrees and either are going forward or reverse, one note is zeus has integrated the trim tabs electronically to help with hole shot. They seem to have an issue with lift with the props being so far back. This maybe the reason that VOLVO has their system so far forward.Their system I felt was very loud and sounded like ratchets and I felt a tremendous amont of vibration in floor. It was very quick for my wife and I to look at each other and say no to Zeus ( note she really wanted a Searay again).
I purchases a Regal 4060 2 years ago. The IPS drives have performed very well, the volvo d 6 have been without issue. I did run into a fire system issue that had a code and would trip the engines like a circuit breaker shutting down the system. It was resolved and Last year was a great boating season for my 4060. We went to many different marinas with some very tight quartes,I was able to parallel park into a slot not much longer than my overall length. No one even comes to catch me anymore at the marina thats how well the system works ( first time everytime is my motto). If you have any questions let me know.
