I have about 600 hours on 8 year old Volvo TAMD63's. just replaced the starboard exhaust elbow which had corrosion where it mates up with the elbow section where the wet exhaust comes in. The elbow replaced was between the turbo and the wet exhaust section. This section has insulation around it and I noticed it because of the exhaust soot on the sections around it. Another good reason for white engine paint and always keeping it clean.

Is this normal? I pulled the port elbow and it was fine.

Very easy fix but incredibly expensive part, retail over $800.

Thanks

can you post a pix of the installation?

How are the 2 sections fastened- with a flange clamp or with bolts or ...? Other than visible soot, did it appear secure or slightly loose/a bit separated? Just checking for a friend with a TAMD72A.

There is a flange clamp to hold it on each end. Very easy to take off to inspect. Took less than 10 minutes to take off and reinstall the port side which had not failed and was in good shape. You really need to look inside it to tell if it is worn. The failed part was not loose. There was a leak where it failed, both water and soot. Not much water though as it is "down stream" of the water exhaust elbow.
