yes, get a cheap digital volt ohm meter and measure the voltage at the gage terminals (should be 12V or so) and then measure the resistance of the tank sending unit with the wire off and compare it to the spec you can find on the web. In the process look for broken or corroded connections. how does the meter behave?

Yeah, that's good advice from Bruce. Check to be sure it isn't the sending unit because you'll have a heckuva time getting a new gauge to match. Of course, you can then do what I just did and just replace ALL the gauges so they match !!!
