So I won't be tackling this issue myself but wanted to get some input from the many experts on the forum.

Engine: 1998 Volvo-Penta 5.0GL Engine code 5GLPBYC41101628523868854 (electric fuel pump)

Issue: When starting either the starboard or port motor I pump my throttle a couple of times and fire up the motor. With my starboard motor, now it starts fine but when I bring it back to idle it dies. Pump the throttle a couple more times and it fires up again with same results. If I start it and keep the throttle above 1200 rpm until the motor is warmed up I can finally bring the rpm back down to idle speed. I had noticed last year at the end of the season that when putting the motor in gear I would have to goose the throttle a little higher right after engagement to keep it from dying but could then bring it back down to sync with the port motor.

So, anyone have some general thoughts on the problem? If I haven't put enough information in please let me know.

Thanks _ James

Have you checked to see if the choke is functioning.

Was this before of after the engines were warmed up?

Do you ever get back-fire out the carb?...what carb? Q-jet, holley?

Some prelim possible causes are choke sticking, float valve sticking, something blocking low speed idle or need adjusting.

Kida: have not checked the choke yet. As for having to goose the motor it didn't happen everytime.

jtbt15 - holley carb. I did not get any backfire this weekend but remember a time last year it did.

SN shows a Holly W/ electric choke, with motor cold ,check to see if choke is almost closed all the way.
Hot, check to see if it is open all the way

We mean almost closed ,to within a 1/8 inch. completely closed tight would flood the motor.

Good video! Do adjustment on cold engine and better in morning (cool air temp) where spring adjustment will be stronger. As ambient temp goes up, spring tension is lighter.
