Waddington Effect

See this in my line of work, too. We call it 'if it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is.'

It would be reasonable to say that most of the time something fails, or throws an alarm, or has an 'unusual operating condition' - I just read something about that component or system in the maintenance logs just before leaving the dock.
 
I remember poking a screwdriver up into an oil drain plug hole to get the oil draining. Then it came out in blobs. That was decades ago, but I guess it can still happen. I was behind an old Jeep in an oil change shop in CA and they were struggling to get the oil out.
Sludge was a real problem "back then." There was a trick to install temporary grease fittings in the heads on Oldsmobiles. Use a grease gun to force the sludge out then remove the fittings, let engine heat melt the grease for oil to flow again.
 
It looked more waxy to me than just piles of dirt. In any event as soon as detergent became widely used it stopped collecting. narrow oil passages of the day were known to plug up and be very difficult to open. There were ever bypass kits for some problem passages.
 
Yeah, Bruce, I remember those kits too. All means we're too old...
