It seems to me that wake surfing has become really popular on YouTube lately. Watching the videos makes me wish we had discovered this back in the 70's when I was a teen. Any thoughts about it's safety? Is it legal in most places?

As a surfer when a kid this really looks cool.
Checked it out this year in Greenport.
You need a special boat which is not cheap.
Won't work with other boats.

It is awesome and very safe in a wake board or wake surf boat due to the inboards. Would not be safe riding close to an outboard or stern drive. I am a life long water skier and wake boarder( over the last few years). I wake surf with a friend who has the right boat. The best part of the sport is that it takes place at 9 mph as the boat plows through the water creating the wake. You are also right off the back of the boat which makes it a great spectator sport. It is much easier than wake boarding in both technique and on the body. No high speed falls! The more people the better for the heavier the boat the bigger the wake (legally of course). Everyone sits on one side to create the rip curl. Any wake board/ski boat works but now the new models can specialize. You can also add water bags in the boat that you fill for weight.
If you have never done it seek it out. It is the coolest feeling to chase the boat without the pull of the boat. Happy Thanksgiving BE family!

Carvervirgin's spot on! Nothing better in the right environment! Well, there are better things - but it's a hoot!

One of my friends has been dying to try this from the back of my boat.

He moved up from Florida a few years ago and spent some time being a pro surfer down there.

He even bought a special short board to do it and had it sent up to New York.

Unfortunately I had some bad luck with getting my diesels re-built so my boat has been on the hard for 2 years (should be ready to go next season I hope)

My boat (13 meter Trojan w/ 16ft beam) at 1200rpm's throws a crazy wake like at least 4ft high, my friend said it would be an awesome ride and very easy to do

Hoping to get some video this Summer!

Happy Holidays!!
