Can't imagine anything but a mechanical failure like controls stuck in reverse or something along these lines. On boats that size in addition to cameras the deck crew is always in constant radio contact with the captain so he had to know what was behind

Portofino's harbor is very small and I think that the captain realized that his 175' yacht could not turn around once inside due to the large number of small boats already in.
BTW, the name of the yacht is "TALES" and it is for sale for around $17M.

I can't believe he would have gone in unless he knew he would fit Even if that was the case, he could have backed out all the way not tried to turn with no space. That's why I suspect a mechanical problem

Actually I just checked the charts, 55m is the noted limit for the harbor the larger boats likely all back in to the quay to med moor.

There had to be some kind of control issue. You don't see a thruster working that I can tell. Not that you can't spin a 50 meter without one with the engines. But in this situation I think you'd see it being used.

Plus if you notice at the start of the video there is already a boat acting as a tug on the stern of the yacht.

I'm willing to bet the owner took control and made an ass of the crew. Seen it on Block Island. Note the dinks came out to help spin the boat. I am surprised no thruster wake is evident. I cannot imagine a boat that size does not have a bow thruster and it certainly was not in use.

I take that back. I think I do see some wash from a thruster. But not much and not for long.

This may be just be purely a F up on the captains part.

In that if say the boat one had one functioning engine, as a classed vessel with flag state rules, it should not be leaving the Harbour.

But there are a lot of small boats on the scene real fast like a problem was expected before hand.

If he was trying to turn the boat around then he was coming in the harbor not leaving. Boats med moor and looking at the chart and the google sat the only way for a large boat to dock there is to turn just outside and back in to med moor

On a boat that size in case of a control failure it would take a while for the engineer to make it to the ER... or he could have wrapped a line on shaft and lost one engine ... who knows

"Thrusters are for wimps!"......says Al Czervik noted boat handler who most likely was at the controls here.
