A friend told me the other day, that the waste lines should be changed every 10-15 years or they smell.....True ?

I have a waste odor in the aft cabin but I attribute it to the holding tank and I am hoping this year it will go away as I've discovered a new and improved tank "odor eater"

More like every 4 to 5 years. Is your head a raw water or fresh water flush? If raw water critters often grow in the bowls rim.
If you have an Aluminum tank check it for leaks. I had a 30 gallon Aluminum waste tank on the bottom that I had to replace.
Using a warm wet rag and wrapping it around the waste hoses should show you if they are permmiated.
Many people have changed most of their discharge lines to schedule 40 PVC this should give you more time between changing out waste lines.

We are on a fresh water lake and have always had fresh wAter flush. My last boat had the original waste tank that was 25 years old and I owned it for 12 years. No smell issue. I pump out almost every week, rinse occasionally when weather is hot, and add chemicals after pump out. I have wife and two girls all weekend and use the potty, shore facilities are unpleasant. I don't think the number of years is as important as fresh or salt water, how often you pump out, and the chemicals you use. To change out or lines that don't smell makes no sense. I would however change the waste hoses if I was changing the tank.

Hose manufacturers can promise their hoses won't permmiate all they want...but they will, brackish water, salt water or fresh water it doesn't matter, unless it's a straight drop. I use as much pvc as possible a 10' stick at $5.50 is easier on the pocket book than $10 a foot for hose and you won't have to worry about it permmiating.... Venting is the key to a holding tank,,the larger the better,,,I vent with 1.5' when at all possible....and cross vent the tank...two individual vents to the tank and not "t'd" together......AND if anyone on your boat is using antibiotics, that can kill the tank and cause odor,,,,,,you want to keep your holding tank aerobic...also don't use anything to clean the toilet than kill the bacteria

If you are going to try and odor control product I recommend Odorloss it won't kill the aerobic bacteria which is good. However if your tank and lines are shot it won't help much.
Properly venting the tank as BarrenRiver said is a good thing.
