Friends of Watch Hill received the following update from the NPS which we would like to share with you.

“The dredging that affected safe navigation at Watch Hill has been completed. As the National Park Service mentioned at the FOWH Memorial Day Meeting last year, their intention was to replace the electrical system and boardwalks around the marina at some point. The subsequent bulkhead failure in B basin led to further engineering studies being done before they undertook the electrical work. As it stands now, the NPS is waiting for funding to do the additional work that was discovered during the engineers inspection of the bulkhead components. With that in mind the previously identified and funded work is on hold. The marine electrical system will operate as it did last year.

Sailors Haven is currently under construction and the marina will be closed to visitors until July 20th. It may be opened earlier if the contractor completes the work ahead of schedule."

Friends of Watch Hill is looking forward to the upcoming season and hopes to see all of you there.

In other words, Vote for Hillary and Kiss Watch Hill goodbye?
LOL.

Funding, the is a curse word in washington. Means give money to something that won't benefit any Politician unless one of their family members is doing the work!!

I didn't realize Sailor's Haven was going to be closed part of the season until I saw that message. I didn't realize it needed work, the bulkheads there seemed to be in good shape. Hopefully they are putting in some 50/250 electric setups!

By the time funding gets allocated for watch hill the place will be in ruins ....

Hope they dont loose the money that was already allocated for most of the work not completed .

Rob

I hope the concession crew does not bail :( If the place goes to the crapper, less boats, then less revenue for the concessionaire. Bad for everyone, us boaters, the state and the concessionaire. Friends of Watch Hill can only do so much, and they do a great job!
Let's all keep our fingers crossed! WH is a place I used to go to in the 60s as a child. Hope many more generations will have this place around to experience.

I figured it would be TYPICAL Long Island politics...........b/s

According to FOWH:

Following our recent email "Watch Hill Marina Update" members asked about B Basin bulkhead repairs and dredging inside the marina. FOWH contacted the NPS who have said the "B basin bulkhead was repaired last year after it failed and will remain that way until the larger project is funded. The interior of the marina was not dredged due to time constraints".

FOWH will be sure to update you as we receive information from the NPS. Meantime, we look forward to another good season at Watch Hill.

So the bulkhead, electric and depth inside the basin are the same. Federal BS. Watch that money disappear.

So basically by the time they get funding for the additional required repairs.... more bulkheads will fail ... they still will not have enough contingency money for additional repairs. The existing unused funds will be lost and we will all be SOL !

The park service has no business running a capital improvement project. THEY ARE FING CLUELESS !

God this **** piss's me off.

SO update today .

Took a ride and channel was 5' at dead low tide. only shallow spot is the head buoy. I guess they figured that didn't count. So that will be the ISSUE in a few years .

The bulk head on D is shot . we pulled into i think slip 7 and 8 and the slips were so filled with sand I couldnt get to the dock .

I ended up in slip # 2

By the time funding comes tru for the repairs they didnt bother to look for the first time ... There wont be a D dock. so disgusted at the mishandling of tax payer dollars. People need to be fired . ALOT people need to be fired.

Like i said before the park service has ZERO business running a capital improvement project. With sailors being worked on the summers going to be a nitemare for D dock.

SO even though the channel is good the marina at dead low is still a huge issue to large draft boats.

Rob

By the time they fix the marina, the channel will be shoaled over with sand because less boats and big boats will be coming.

Hey, but Oblama had a $3million Hawaiian vacation!

Seems like the last few years the first trip to Watch Hill in the spring I get stuck in the mud a little distance from the dock and then after that it's okay. I think it's a combination of the early season extra low tides and no boat traffic yet blowing them out. Ideally they would have dredged the marina of course but I'm thinking it's probably not much different than last year.

So speaking of Watch Hill, whats the skinny for Memorial Day?
I am think of heading over the Wednesday before since it sounds like large slips will be hard to get.
Anyone else?

Guess I can rope off before I get in to slip from the poles to mid cleats and blow out the mud if needed.
