Was up to lake Erie this past weekend and boated out of North East Marina (great folks there by the way). Had a great day on Saturday and a bad day Sunday. I left the marina about 11:00 AM with my wife and two little girls. I got about 500 yards out side of the marina and waited for my friend. He was with his wife and little girl. He pulled up along side of me and we talked to decide where we wanted to go. We then to off. Whith in seconds we hear the siren of the "WATER POLICE" and we both stopped. He asked us to stop our engines. One of the guys asked to board our boat and I said no problem. The other clown told us to go back to the marina. When asked why he told me "because I said so". So we go back. He asked for our boat registrations and drivers liscense. We gave them to him. He then told us he was going to cite us for driving within 50' of each other. I told him we were just taking off. His reply "not from where I was watching" The fine was $70.00 each. Told us if we wanted to fight it we had to come back and talk with the judge. We live 125 miles away and he knew we weren't going to come back. I guess they have a quota too. In any case I just wanted to vent. Add to the cost of going boating. You just have to wonder how people with authority get off making a seven year old girl scared to death.

Hi jmat5,

Based on what you say, that is just wrong... and seems way out of line. I guess you can't raft up these days without being 50' apart from one another egh? I agree, it seems the local LEO, are taking advantage of the situtation.

Next time come over to Ohio/Sandusky area.. We've had a lot of CG and Border Patrol and local LEO presence, but so far, I have not heard of any situtations like this around here.

Regards,

Try and send a letter of explanation with the check addressed to the judge explaining the situation. Might work, but my guess is that the check will be cashed. If it were me, I would drive the 125 just to break balls back! Bring a notarized letter from the other owner as well.
