Water Hose Replacement

The Crossover hose from one water tank to the other sprung a leak.
So I want to replace the entire hose, Aprox, 18'. Below are two pictures, first the original hose, and second a hose I found at Lowes. Both are corrugated, the Lowes hose is used for pools but is less than half the price of the WM hose. The weight feels about the same, and it does have the metal reinforcement.

There is no pressure from one tank to the other, it is a "gravity" feed. I am not concerned about the properties of the hos (although seems to be the same as the original) because I do not drink water from the tanks.

With all that said, am I missing something here about using this as a replacement?

Doesn't matter. He doesn't drink from the tanks. Ever drink from a garden hose?

We used sanitation hose rated for potable water. when we replaced pur cross-over hose last time. Got tired of putzing around with the helic stuff, and it's a pain to clamp onto the T fitting we used to create a drain point for easy winterizing.

A hose not rated for potable water there would fail a future marine survey, I think. Not sure...

The chick at the counter was absolutely food grade. Is that what you meant?? but not sure what that had to do with my question??
 
It means is the hose rated safe for potable water. I agree with David and don't think it mattered here. This hose is just a conduit from one water tank to another and there is no pressure on it. Have the same setup in my 34C.
 
It does matter, someone down the road might drink the water. Don't do anything on your boat on the quick and cheap.
 
I am with Robyns Nest on this one. I am in Mfg and you would be disgusted at the "cost saving" ideas that get thrown around and the ones that get deployed. Think of the designers application parameters.
Pool Vacuum Hose:
1. Used for non-pressurized intermittent discharge water flow.
2. Water is heavily chlorinated, non-potable.
3. Kids pee in the water all of the time.
4. Never standing water
5. For the Engineers on here. A PFMEA list
If the hose leaks - fails, it is easily detectable, no one dies or gets hurt and the customer needs to go buy another one !!!

Can you assure Walter the hose he is replacing is food grade? If so, is there a Preventative Mainteneance flushing, sterilization, replacement interval schedule in his manuals for the hose in question? Anything rubber is going to deteriorate over time. Food grade is merely a composition that prevents a minsicule amount of chemical "gunk" from leeching into the system. As much as Walter uses his boat, I doubt there would be an issue.

I've never seen food grade anything addressed in a survey, however, I can't afford to play in your playgrounds. I can tell you that on the big haze grey things with white numbers on the bow there are maineneance, sterilization and replacemant plans for anything involving water coming into contact with food.

Your call Walter. Me....If I were you based on how you say you use your boat....I'd go with the Lowes hose, although the food grade flat sided waste hose for clamping purposes sounds interesting depending on cost.
 
You guys never fill your potable water tanks with a garden hose?
 
From a safety standpoint this hose is non critical, it can't sink the boat the only water that can leak ou is already on the boat.

Go with loews.

Only after drinking from said garden hose.

Good apropo comment. But I purposely don't fill the FW tank with the dock hose until after I have rinsed the boat in order to get the bad hose taste flushed and minimized.

Plus , I personally do not ever care to drink the water in my FW tank (newer poly type) since it is essentially stagnant water always exposed to "open air" thru the vent.

If I were stranded and out of bottled water , sure, I'd drink it before SW.

FYI, I never cheap out when it comes to boat stuff. But I now do question the value, hence this post. If there is a solid reason to pay a ton more because it is "Marine", so be it I am there. But with that said, this "Marine" rating is a ton of BS in most cases, in other words just simply a waste of money!!!

I only mention that because it sounded like you were wondering what the difference could be. I was just making an observation, not trying to argue the merits of food grade products for your application.

Although it's a bit off topic, I'm with Sandy on the garden hose thing. I always let it run for a while to flush it before filling tanks etc.
 
Okay after reading that I decided I am gonna switch my ice maker to bottled water or add a really good filter.

Please..... If the hose is flushed, as most kids will do as they don't like drinking hot water, all is fine. I'm 60 an have been drinking or bathing from garden hose origin water for well over 50 of those years. I'm still upright. Follow the money!
