Naut Home, we are not sure if the odor and water in bilge is related or not. Please post if you find something that may be helpful and we will do the same.
Joyful, we have not discovered anything yet. What kind of problem are you having? Does the water arrive after running the boat above 10 mph? Does it have an odor? Our boat is 1998 Carver 355. Please let us know if you find anything and we will do the same.
My 326 had a problem with water getting in the mid cabin bilge. After many hours of trying to determine where water was coming from, I discovered it was coming from the port water tank that is located under the bed in the aft cabin. Carver used plumbers pipe dope to seal the threads of the 90 fitting that were installed on the water tanks. The pipe dope had degraded and I ended up pulling both water tanks out and using teflon tape to reseal the pipe threads. while I had the tanks out I also noticed a that one of the tank outlets had a slight break in its weld. I ended up replacing the tank to solve this problem.
I don't know where the fresh water tanks are on a 356, but I would look at them as a possible source for a leak. Lake water will stink in a bilge where city/fresh water will take alot longer to smell.
I just noticed the new replies. It sounds like we all have the same issue. I did look around after haul-out in the fall, but did not see anything out of the ordinary on the outside of the boat. I am leaning toward the water getting in on the split line of the boat just above the exhaust on the sides. I will re-seal this area in the spring and cross my fingers. Don't a major issue, but I would really like to find out why and how. By the look at the boat, it will be a couple of months before I get to her.
