Well I got that sinking feeling in my stomach this weekend. Went to change the oil in my port engine and found milky light brown oil about an 1 ВЅ" high on the dipstick. Engine ran fine while warming up.
Checked oil last week (looked ok) and ran engine for 15 minutes. This weekend didn't check oil and started engine to warm up for oil change and found the bad oil. So this happened during the last two runs. (Last week or this weekend) I am fairly mechanically inclined and don't have a problem working on it myself but not sure where to start and have a severely limited budget at the moment. Dock neighbors threw so many theories at me; I am not sure where to start now to determine what the problem is.
So here are the facts.
1.350Q CC engines freshwater raw cooled.
2.Left the oil in for the moment.
3.Did not pull plugs yet.
4.Risers and logs look ok outside but mounting bolts are rusty.
5.I know these have not been pulled in about 5 years. At least the time my father owned the boat.
6.I went ahead and changed the impellor even though the old one looked in good shape.
So not sure how to proceed right now. Dock neighbors said it could be manifold/risers, cracked block, bad head gasket etc. Made my head swirl.
1.How do I best determine problem without pulling parts and throwing money at it?
2.Should I just bite the bullet and call a mechanic? Which I hate to do if I can diagnose and fix myself.
3.Should I go ahead and drain the oil either way right now? And if so would it be ok to warm it up first?
4.I've read about pulling the plugs and cranking the engine to dispel water?
5.If I do pull the risers and logs what exactly am I looking for to see if that is it?
