Anyone out there know how serious the water level issue in the bay is these days. I'm getting mixed reports from friends. I havnt been up there in a few years but we're planning to go later this summer.

I'm on the bay as we speak near victoria habour and levels are about 6 inhes below chart datum. Thats about 8.5 inches below water levels of a couple of years ago. In other words, a few years ago levels were 2.5 inches above chart datum.

Thanks for the info Norman. Any idea if this applies to the North Channel as well?

We boated north to Parry Sound and found levels below normal there so I'll assume the north channel is below chart datum as well
I should point out that we still had plenty of water in the channels and were never concerned about bouncing off bottom on the small craft route. Of course venture outside the markers and you do so at your own risk.

The water levels up a little bite from late year.

thanks everyone. helps out a lot. I hear that the canal under the port severin lock has been widened...
have they done any dredging through potato patch?

Hey Andrew, if you're referring to that part of the waterway that passes under the highway 400 bridge I didn't notice the channel had been widened. In fact, it's quite narrow in a couple of spots...just wide enough for one boat. Seemed to be plenty of depth though....my depth gauge read between 9 to 16 feet in that part of the channel.
As for the potato island channel again narrow channel but about 12 feet of water. Going through the rock cut at potato..two new markers have been added at the south end of the cut and narrowed the channel. It's a tight squeeze there also.
There are a number of "low water" markers from Port Severn to Honey Harbour...but again while staying inside the marked routes presented no hazards.

Just back from Killarney on Tuesday, and the water is above chart datum...not by much, but yes, above. I believe reported as .1 meter above, yes that's decimal-1 meter.

There were only two low water buoys encountered by us along the way, right at the turn, at the bottom of Beaverstone Bay, at the eastern entrance into Collins Inlet, where it's always shallow. No real issues...

I cannot speak to further west from Killarney to North Channel, nor south of Twelve Mile Bay (Sans Souci), our home marina area, but would think you're fine using chart datum to decide.
