Last weekend we were anchored off of Short Beach(CG Station near Jones Inlet) and had the floating raft out and the kids and I went swimming. When we came of of the water we noticed small green bugs on us, almost like tiny catapillers and when I pulled in the raft they were all over the bottom. I have never seen these before but I chalked it up to an unknown and 1st time swimming in the area this year.
Yesterday we did the same but anchored in Reynolds Channnel off of Long Beach High School and we had same situation with these bug like creatures all over. Some much so that they were all on my swim platform when I pulled in the raft for the day. I wish I had take a photo to share but anyone else experiencing this, in all my years in the area I have never seen these.

So my wife is wrong? Those little guys aren't centipedes that curl up in your ear and use you as a host body? It's hard enough getting her to go in the water with a shark in my canal, now she's convinced that these little shrimp are going to make a home in her ear. What can I say, she's from Queens...

We also knew them as sea lice with we lived on Long Island. Had them at Zachs......grossed me out!

I agree with Rob, sounds like grass shrimp but hard to tell for sure. The sea lice that bite seem fairly unusual, and when they bite it's like a green fly so you'd know it.

I was in the bay the past 2 weekends and the water was exceptionally clear by the Lindenhurst cut and clearer than usual closer to the bridge. The brown tide seems to have stayed further east and I read a week or so ago when the water temp gets above 75 (which it is now) it tends to kill it.

You have to worry more about things going in your body and killing you in fresh water... Happens with amoebas that you can't see.

definitely not shrimp- we know what they look like as we get them in the canal behind the house all the time.

Sounds like sea lice for sure!!! Hemlock Cove is infested with them.

I'm with Walt on this too.....def sounds like sea lice.

Interesting how there are none of these creatures are near the marsh by Lindenhurst cut, we go in the water all the time.....

Maybe has something to do with Bergen Point.
