Here's a excerpt from one of the anglers on board, from another forum. And, the hazards are marked...on the charts.
"I know the situation well. I was one of the 4 fishermen onboard. We had just returned from a 2 day Canyon trip and decided to stop at the Atlantic Highlands Marina for fuel before heading further to our home port. It was a very high tide and we approached the marina entrance with the red buoy to our right. Unfortunately, we didn't see the other channel markers, which were slightly angled from the other direction. We were at idle speed and just stopped. As the tide went out, we knew what had happened and it wasn't going to be good.
We called TowBoat US and they got us off the boat safely and quickly. Many thanks to those guys. They did a great job. The plan was to wait until the next day and get it picked with a crane. The boat was fine through both the low and high tide cycles. There was no damage to the running gear and it was just stuck on the pilings. Unfortunately, the SeaStreak Ferry uses that marina and threw enough of a wake to rock the boat where a piling punctured the hull and down she went. We got the boat out today, but it's not good.
For those who are being critical of the situation, it was an honest accident. The hazard area wasn't marked nor even visible and the captain missed the beginning of the channel. He made a bad judgement call and paid the price. Fortunately no one was hurt."
