What do you use for chafing gear?

Thinking about the spring splash and need to replace/update some docklines. My boat has braided lines for the home dock and the previous owner used plastic tubing (clear) for chafe protection. Seemed to be sub-optimal since:1) in cold weather the stuff became unworkable and would stick in one position (bent); and 2) the edges were firm enough to cut through the small lines typically used to prevent it from "walking" on the line.

I see no shortage of do-dads at West M and online sites (including our beloved BoatFix). Based upon some of the ingenuity I have observed on this site, I can't believe there aren't some with novel ideas for good stuff cheap that actually looks OK (the clear tubing gets grungy on the inside by the end of the season)?
