What happened to the Hudson Forum?

On our trip back from out east, my VHF suddenly starting blaring a siren-like noise. It was an "emergency alert" - someone must have pressed their distress button. The noise was unbearable! I had to turn the radio off.

You are suppose to get a MMSI number for your radio. Then if the button is pushed the Coast Guard will look up that number and see your contact information. Then they can call you to see what's the problem is before they dispatch emergency services. You can get one through Sea Tow, no charge. I thought everyone knew that. I guess not.

The MMSI is also great to contact fellow boaters who have it. That is why I have mine posted in my signature.

I assume it starts earlier the higher you go? So if we went up to Roundout, it would be earlier?
Mid october is tough as people are pulling boats already by us and then there is the kids in school thing.
But thanks for the info!

You could always come for the weekend and stay at Haverstraw. The best foliage by far is right around West Point so there is no reason to go all the way up to Roundout

So being I got yelled at by a couple of the admirals in regards to the last "large" raft up we all had, does it mean we will not raft together on 8/16 for my BBQ?

Don't understand why. Heard it was a great time and am looking forward to this years

Who yelled? Just don't invite them back problem solved:)

Which admirals???

It was a great time, but the weather was also perfect for the raft-up. Had there been wind, we most likely would have had problems.

Did not know that all in radio shot would get a blaring signal. Why would this be? What purpose would that serve?

I was talking about the last raft up when we had to break up. Not the last year BBQ. Some of the admirals stated no more big rafts so I am just asking... Can we assign an anchor captain, or someone to make sure all the boats are safe, pull stern anchors etc... And no worries about the weather, I am taking care of that as well.

With the proper amount of bow and stern anchors, there is no limit to the amount rafted up. It just requires participation by everyone.

And I will be a happy participant to ensuring that we have the proper anchors set up. It will be a great day for all of us to enjoy each other's company.

Large raft-ups require a lot more attention to detail, the correct amount of anchors, and someone always watching. You need to remember that when the tide changes, stern anchors become bow anchors, most people think they are only there to keep you from swinging, which is not true. Most stern anchors are smaller than bow anchors, so they need even more attention. Too many people see a raft-up and think that they will just tie up, like they are tied to a dock, without regard for the added weight and need for additional anchors.

Large raft-ups are fun, but if the anchors start dragging, it can become a nightmare. I prefer smaller tie-ups, but if the weather is good again, I'm all for a repeat of last year's BBQ

Agree on stern anchors. Too often there are 6 bows and two sterns and that is where the trouble usually begins.
