Asked a friend that went over to Bimini last weekend if the 2 sticks on the beach that show the aproach to the inlet were still there.
I think he is still laughing.:D

You mean the old ranges thst lead you into the beach before you made a left and ran along the beach?

When I was there s few months ago I think I saw at least one of them. Not that you use them any more. :-)

Over the years,we have seen those markers change. I remember when they were really just sticks(looked like branches off a tree) stuck in the sand.Seemed like more of an adventure going over in those days and more fun for small boaters.

They were there as of a week ago. They are a couple hundred yards right of the approach to Bimini Sands. However, I would not use them. The channel is well marked into Bimini Bay.

Be aware, it is a little skinny at low tide right before you make your left turn toward the Bay.

Ken

Haven't used them in years, it a but skinny along the beach after you turn off the range. The channel is marked but watch the sandbank on the green aide it always buikd into the channel.

Nowadays I bypass bimini altogether, bimini bay / resort work basically destroyed the island between th construction, dust, taking down the trees along the beach at the north end. I now clear in cat cay and keep on going across the bank

Pascal I agree 100%. Bimini has changed for the worst the old town feeling is gone now that the Bimini Super Fast is coming in several times a week. Such a shame.

Ken

Hope it brings some prosperity to the local Bahamians. Glad to have the opportunity to enjoy the old Bimini in past years.
Might go the way of JACK TAR VILLAGE on Grand Bahama (Freeport)

boatum, Were you ever to Jack Tar Village before it turned into ruins?
Long time ago but I still have Videos.

So far it doesn't look like it has brought any prosperity to bimini, if anything it feels like it has sucked the life out of Alice town especially as the cattle boat brings the tourists right into the resort bypassing Alice town altogether.

Joe we never made it over until 2008 where we went and stayed in the Abacos. Both sides of the trip went around via West end to the Little Bahama bank. Subsequent years had us in Lucaya before the GBYC tanked. I hear that opened up again?

I disagree with your assessment on the prosperity of the old towns. RWB has been running hundreds of people down to Bailey, porgy, and Alice Town with their multi car trams. I sat in Stuart's having my conch salad a day the ship came in. There was a wait for conch salad with over 20 people all getting off of the RWB Tram.

Be assured I do not like it, but there are definitely more people spending money in the older towns

I hope so... Last time we went was last September and it was just depressing.

I was there a few months ago and I found it depressing as well. They my run some people into town but the town looks more depressed than I remember it back in the days before Resorts World opened.

We were there in May '14 and could not wait to leave.

Capt Bill1 or PascalG,

Can you give some specifics on what's depressing?

Thanks.....Roy

First thing you notice is how dirty it is. There is dust everywhere as well as trash... Nobody seems to care. Buildings have this semi finished look... I guess you can't blame resort world as the residents could do their share by picking up the trash. Enough abandoned golf carts and appliancs in front yards to make a redneck happy. (Can we still use the work redneck?)

Couple of years ago I walked the length of beach from the point almost to RW entrance and could count on the fingers of one hand the number of homes that were finished. By finished, I mean painted, with doors and windows, roof completed and hand rails on balcony and terraces.

I was going to sum it up with two words. Borderline Slum. Walk around the whole town like we did.

I agree 100% with this assessment . There is trash and flies everywhere. For the life of me, I cannot understand why the locals live in their own trash. With the $300.00 cruising permit, and the new VAT, I cannot understand why they don't figure out how to clean up the trash. I asked a couple of times this questions to locals, and their response was that the trash barge only comes to the island every other week.

Where is the VAT money going? We have spent nearly $2,000.00 this trip just in VAT.

I sure hope it is not another corrupt government.

I guess I should be clear, I don't find it depressing to go to Bimini. It just that the towns ( Alice, Bailey, etc.) seem depressed and much less lively than they did in the past. Say when The Red Lion, Complete Angler were open and Mr. Brown was still alive.

As with many Bahamian settlements Alice Town has always been funky, and that's OK with me. It's just that now is seems more lifeless than laid back most of the time. It's just not the same vibe in many ways.

And it may not all be the fault of Resorts World
(what a God awful name) but other factors at work as well. Like maybe a lot less drug money flowing around.

While I imagine some of the money spent in Resorts World ends up staying on Bimini. I'm betting most does not.

I'm just glad I got to go there before Bimini Sands messed up the channel along the beach and the Complete burnt down.
