what is the best route

I will be transporting a boat from Island Marina, I think it is in the lindenhurst area, to the North shore the end of March. What is the best course and inlet to enter the ocean?

Firstlight, I don't know the marina but from Lindenhurst on a nice day you would go out either Fire Island or Jones inlets. You can also use the state channel and go west and out East Rockaway/Debs inlet. I believe all 3 have or will be dredged by the time of your trip. We use East Rockaway a few times a year.

From East Rockaway you have about 13-17 miles depending on your course to the VZ Bridge. I tend to head out toward the Ambrose channel for deeper water as it is less choppy.

Then you are in the harbor and East River. Time your trip if the East River current will be an issue. It can run 5-6 kts in either direction depending on tide. Hellgate can be choppy when the tide is running and it is windy. Keep a keen eye for floating debris and give even small looking objects a wide berth. SOmetimes its the tip of something bigger.

I am good once I enter the ocean . What is the most direct inland channel and inlet to use.
 
most likley fire island only issue in march some times bouys have not been put in yet. I am sure some of the others who dock at the anchorage could give you more detailed info

About 6 years ago I picked up my 41PC in Lindenhurst to bring back to Huntington – it was early March and the buoys where not out yet-I paid Towboat US(Reynolds) to lead me to ocean and I took it from there
Something to conceder
 
In march the lindenhurst cut will not be marked. The babylon cut ( east of lindenhurst ) is always marked as is the state channel. I would take the babylon cut to the state channel then head west. Its all marked stright out jones. The only unknown is the status of the contruction at the wantagh. U may still have to go around to the 2nd draw bridge. Again all marked.

O.K. looks like I will be taking the 33 ft. Silverton the first week of April. I will be leaving West Babylon ( Bergen Point). Will the buoys be in and what is the best route and tide to navigate Jones Inlet.

I am looking at an old chart is the Babylon cut about two miles east of Lindenhurst and also called Oak Iland Channel? Which inlet and at what tide is best? Thank for your help.

ID go jones... tide doesnt matter.... as long as the wind is under 15 knots...

I dont have a chart handy but its the only other north south channel EAST of lindenhust cut and before the RM bridge .
