I don't want to admit it but taking the boat out for the season

this weekend. I'm going to winterize, change oil etc. any one have any recomendation on what weight oil to use . should I use multi weight like a car on single weight since in only runs in the summer

If Merc use their 25/40 marine 4 stroke oil, if Volvo use straight 30 HD oil. I use Chevron Delo 400 straight weight in my 88 OMC 4.3 and it's done well with that over the years. I would not use a conventional multi vis in a marine engine.

What’s the difference between a regular 4 stroke automotive and a 4 stroke Marine oil like the 25W-40 Merc oil?

Get the best of all worlds and use Shell Rotella 15W40. It was originally made for diesel applications but I haven't found one marine mechanic that doesn't say it's the best.

What would you use with old Crusdaers 270's. There were a few qts of stright 40 onboard when we bought it.
Thanks
Niles

Niles, when I had Crusader 270s (350 ci), they called for st 40 wt. The dealer advised me to use Merc 25-40 which I did.

The manual for my 1997 454 Crusaders says to use straight 40. I do not recall what the 15W means. I am finding it very difficult to find a straight 40 oil.

timf, I am having the same problem. If I find it at a national place I will let you know.

Tim, I found straight 40 weight Valvoline and Castrol at place called Advanced Auto Parts...don't konw if you have them in the NE or not. BTW, I sent an email to Crusader and said 40wt for my 350's too.

I found 40 wt there also Niles. You don't need to knock yourself out trying to find it though. My Crusader dealer tells me that Mercruiser 25-40 is the best oil I can put in my Crusader 454 XLs. It is not a multi-grade oil.

Thanks Niles,
A Advanced Auto Parts store just opened up here over the summer. I will check them out. I don't want to get something started here, but does anyone have a preference between Castrol and Valvoline?

Tim, I have run both in cars and trucks, never in marine applications. I had trouble with excessive oil consumption in multiple engines at one time with the Castrol. A friend worked for KCS Railroad and was the head mechanic for that area, they had the same issue in their trucks. I swapped to Havoline and every engine quit using oil. I do not remember what brand they swapped to, but they had the same results.
Never had a problem with Valvoline.

I swapped to Mobil1 back in 1994. I run it in everything including the pushmower. 15W-50 for the boat and lawn mower, 5W-30 in all the autos.

The "W" in 15W-40 stands for Winter viscosity when it is colder you need a thinner oil to get through to avoid cold starter abrasions. That is why for the older engines they say just use straight oil. As we push the engines earlier in the spring and later in the fall it is recommended to use the dual viscosity's for cold start ups.

Rotella T or Delo. And straight 40 but be sure that you don't rev the engine for the first few seconds using straight 40 but then that advice goes for any engine with any oil. Those 2 products are for OTR and OR deisels, just about the roughest service ever.
