What's the latest on FI Inlet and Moriches?

We are heading out east tomorrow around 8 am (high tide at the inlet is about 10:30) and I've never gone out of FI Inlet (heck I've only come in once) and I know there's been some changes from the charts...so is it marked clearly now?

Also, if it's too nasty out there I may come back in and stay inside...if I do I should hit Moriches around mid tide (and rising) there. Is the route that leads towards the south towards the inlet still navigatable?

Came in fi inlet July 4th weekend.
My path is below.
It looks like you run up onto land but your not.
Just follow the buoys.
Head west then south.
I would go outside.
Moriches I hear is tough even at high tide.

I also hear there is dredge boats there now.
 
I went out FI Inlet July 5th and it was marked well then. Sea Tow posted on FB today that dredging equipment is being moved into the inlet so I'm not sure if that impacts anything.

Where are you heading? I have not heard good things about Moriches this year and if you're continuing east past it I think you're better off sticking outside from FI Inlet.
 
Jeff, like evryone else said, the FI inlet is fine. Just follow the beach on the north side to the last red buoy before hanging a left like Dave shows on his chart.

With respect to Moriches, I would only go at high tide. Per Sea Tow last week, it has not changed at all since I went thru July 4th. Here are their directions: Need to take channel route. Moriches inlet route no good. East cut has filled in.

Channel route: Turn north at green 17 (but keep 17 on right heading east, which is technically wrong side). Go between 17A and 18, then turn south to 20. Shallow spot between 18 and 20, 2 ft. soft sand at low tide, so we should be there at at least mid-tide. Then we are back in the channel. Moriches dredged east of Coast Guard station, so no problem once back in channel.

Took the outside route. Had to keep to about 15 knots so its taking a while. Just rounding Montauk now.

Got here around 2:30 BUT upon arrival we discovered that the whaler got its ass kicked and we lost a plastic fuel tank (watch out for that somewhere between Moriches and Montauk :( ) and a bunch of screws pulled the expoxy plugs out and then whatever was loose just banged holes everywhere.

So I either need to patch it together tonight/tomorrow and keep going with it OR leave it here and pick it up by trailer after my vacation.

ha, you must have past me as you passed Shinnecock. I was outside in 30-45' east of the inlet. That must have been a long and lumpy trip for you. Good luck with the Whaler...
 
Should have waited a day, yesterday was beautiful on the ocean! Hope the whaler wasn't beat up too badly.
 
Sound was amazing yesterday too. We took the Cross Sound Ferry from New London to Orient and the conditions were beautiful. Could see Orient as we pulled out of New London, and the water was really calm. Never been to Block Island, but if there was ever a day to do it, yesterday was probably that day.
Really made me wish I could put my boat out in the Peconic Bay somewhere for a month or two one of these years.

yea...one look at that chart/route I would run outside too. Gotta give you GSB boaters credit for handling those depths..I start getting queasy around here when the sounder goes under 10 ft.
 
Hey All,

We came home on Sunday (a day early due to the crappy weather) and decided that it was just too uncomfortable outside (even I started getting green) so we came inside at Shinnecock.

I can now report that Moriches should not be a problem at mid tide and up if you take the dogleg through the inlet area. The lowest reading I saw was 6' (actually 4' plus the offset for transducer placement) in the 5mph zone near the RV campsites. Coming west I went shy of the buoy that marks the main channel towards the north of the east inlet entry (i believe it was red 24) and then I headed out of the west inlet entry just west of the shoaling towards the green (15?) buoy to get back to the main channel...basically what I've done for the last couple of seasons with the Formula.

Certainly more drama than the outside with the bridges (one closed on me as I was upon approach due to an ambulance and stopping while towing is a dicey affair) and the Moriches situation but its a lot easier on the boat, kids and animals.

Hi Jeff, I was fishing off Montauk Sunday and was wondering when your return trip would be. You had bad timing on this trip, strong east winds heading out and strong west winds for the way back! Usually at least one direction is calm! Glad it all worked out though.

Yeah. The weather was not my friend this year. Except for the trip from Montauk to Nantucket (wind with current for most of the trip) we had a pretty rough go of it. However, I doubt we have been able to do it in the Formula as (relatively) comfortably as we did it with the Prestige.

This might have been our last year doing this long trip at this time of the year. I think it's been 3 out of the last 4 years where the weather sucked for much of the trip. We will most likely make our long trip earlier in the summer (without the kids most likely).
 
Also consider the second and third week in September. Often the weather settles and marinas are not crowded. Mid September has some of the best boating in that area.
 
Jeff, I prefer to try to fit in my longer trips earlier in the summer, usually just after the July 4th rush. I had too many Labor Day trips cancelled due to weather in the past, plus earlier in the summer you have time to reschedule if it doesn't work out. Last year though I went to Edgartown for a few days leading into Labor Day weekend and we had great weather, you never know.

Mid-September can be great weather but it's not unusual to have storms offshore that time of year and dealing with long trips and getting in and out the inlets can be tricky also if there are big swells when you are leaving from the south shore.
 
After talking to some people I'm curious what people use as a guide to tides in Moriches .
