In Stuart, FL, there are 2 bridges that carry traffic across the St. Lucie river. The "old" Roosevelt bridge is a 2 lane draw bridge that has a clearance of approx. 12 feet. The "new" Roosevelt bridge is a 6 lane fixed bridge with a clearance of approx. 65 feet. The new bridge practically goes over top of the old bridge. On a normal day, the draw bridge will open "on demand" and will stay open generally until all boat traffic has cleared. Last night, after the fireworks in Stuart, there were many boats waiting to go thru the bridge. The bridge tender said that he could not open the bridge because of pedestrian traffic. Then, vehicle traffic became gridlocked on the bridge. Eventually, the bridge openned. After a very short time, the operator closed the bridge (in front of a 57 footer in a narrow channel after the operator specifically told the 57 footer that he would hold the bridge for him) because the operator "had to clear some auto traffic".

I understand that vehicle traffic often has priority over boat traffic, but for this bridge under these circumstances, the bridge should have openned and stayed open for a very long time.

Who sets the policy on this bridge? I would like to contact them to discuss last night's events.
