I was over to the boat tonight to pick up a project I'm working on and found the controller (3 posn, off, high, low) for a 12 volt fan melted, bulkhead scorched and headliner burnt. By sheer luck I guess it didn't catch light or we would have had some major damage. I guess it got to the point where it eventually shorted out and tripped the breaker. I've no idea why this would have happened, the battery charger was on but that shouldn't have caused a voltage spike sufficient enough to melt down the controller, or maybe I'm wrong. The system was being fed from the solar panel as well but that's regulated too.
We've used these cheapo fans from Canadian Tire for years and they've run constantly for months on end. Lesson learned, disaster avoided, I don't think I'll be leaving them running unattended anymore. Pictures to follow Monday.
