The way fire Island inlet has moved over the years someday in a big storm a new inlet will be cut and FI inlet moved back east or just a new inlet across Jones beach or FI. Is this the time?

noaa storm surge forecast, put big waves on top and then what?

I remember going boating on Moriches Bay after hurrican Gloria, when a new inlet was cut into the bay. It was really weird looking out on the Atlantic from 2' of water. The biggest problem to us then was all the debris, roofs, ovens, refrigerators and other stuff, in the bay. The powerful people who lived on what became a new island managed to get the federal government to pay for the reconnection with the rest of the barrier island. That inlet was gone. It will be interesting to see what the landscape and geography look like on Monday. Stay safe, all. Hy

While I agree money talks any new breech into the Great South Bay is a rise and fall in tide problem. There are thousands of people who live on low lying reclaimed marshland that would be in danger of flooding if there was a new inlet. Looking at the google earth map that Abalmuth posted Gilgo which was an inlet until Robert Moses filled it in looks the most likely to reopen.

As far as Fire Island inlet, it has been moving since the glacier. Some people don't know when the F.I. lighthouse was built in 1826, the inlet was there, over 5 miles from where it is now. Later in the 60's a beacon was built where the inlet was at that time. The erosion was slowed with the jetties built at Democrat point and sore thumb but noreasters cause more damage to the inlet then a hurricane does.

Hopefully it dredges it out to make it deeper.
That would save us some money and get us some good out of this storm!

It was Little Pike's Inlet. It really cleaned the water in the eastern bay while it was open. and it did improve fishing there as well but sand filled in a bunch of deeper holes where there were porgies and other species.

I would love to see a breach just east of Gilgo, put a draw bridge for the parkway and instead of a 15 mile trek to the inlet, it would be more like 3 or 4 miles!

That would be fantastic. The only problem is that they would probably make it like a $15.00 toll to get across the bridge which would mess up my top down cruises on the Ocean Parkway on nice days.

There have been proposals floating around for opening up a new inlet for better flushing of the bay but Billy pointed out the biggest issue. The tide swing on the ocean side is much bigger than on the bay side since it takes so long for the bay to fill up and drain through FI Inlet. The tide at the inlet is starting to go down 3 hours before the tide in the back bay peaks because of this. If you open up another inlet and significantly increase the water flow into the bay then you also increase the tide swing. The vast majority of the development along the GSB was done after Gilgo inlet was closed, so if you now introduce another foot of tide or even a few inches it will impact lots and lots of homes, marinas, etc. every time we have a storm.

Can anyone post a link to find pics of the old inlet by Gilgo. I would like to see this.

thanks

I'm a big fan. Designing the bridges so that trucks could never use the parkways was brilliant.

The Power Broker is a loong but awesome book on Robert Moses. Won the Pulitzer. Pretty much explains all L.I.'s traffic and transportation problems. From why the Northern and Southern pkwys are curvy to why all LIRR traffic must go slow thru jamaica. After reading that book I cant say I am a fan of Moses. man never even had a drivers license. He was a genius though....he invented the Public Authority system and figured a way to keep tolls long after a project was paid for.

Why do you have to find the few flaws in it?
Stop and think for a second what he accomplished and when he accomplished it.
At a time with no cells, no internet.
He didn't know what a good design would be.
He didn't have the info we have today.
Was he prejedice, yes, that is why he made the roads the way he did, but back then, that was the way it was. He followed public sentiment!

Interesting, the end of that article Dave posted seems to be advocating for the Fire Island highway Robert Moses wanted to build. While I like most of his projects I'm glad that one never got done and hope no one is seriously considering it now!

If you read up on him he was advised by many that some of his projects would make transportation worse. yet a man who never had a drivers license just did what he wanted to do because he had the money and most were afraid of him. The thing that struck me was his being advised to build a subway down the vanwyk. he had the right of way, he had the money and the property was there. he didnt take mass transportation so he didnt care. so years and years later they built only thing they could , the airtrain at enormous costs. Same with the LIRR. he hd the lirr temporarily move the tracks so he could build vanwyk. he was advised to leave lines there so trains could go express through jamaica. he didnt ride so he didnt care. now millions a day go 5mph thru jamaica. His biggest scams were the tolls. Tolls were put in place "until the bondholders are paid back". When the bondholders were paid back 99% he just sold more bonds. It was a perpetual money making scam.

Dont get me wrong, Jones Beach gave millions access to the ocean that they never had. They lived on an island and never went to the beach. he did have vision. For Parks and Recreation he was a master. his transportation projects left alot to be desired from day 1. Its a long book but if you live and travel on LI and the city its a good summers read.

I wish they would have let him build the bridge across the Sound at the end of 135. That would have made a huge difference for people getting off the island to Westchester & Conn.
