Will I burn up my raw water intake impeller ?

I used to rinse my holding tank by filling from the pumpout port. I have found it far more effective to rinse the entire system by flushing fresh water down the bowl.. We pump out at home and I know it's not good to flush w/o water coming into the raw water line but figure 8 or 10 bowls of fresh water flushing won't kill the impeller???... I suppose I could rig up a bucket and hose so I could run water from the pickup under the boat?

Is your intake water pump remote? If not, then you should have no problem.

And if you use your water hose to fill the holding tank through the pumpout port, I wouldn't use that same hose to fill your fresh water tank with.

I've never taken the jabsco head apart.. The service kit came w/ just one impeller.. I guess I don't have a remote intake pump..Seperate hose for filling the fresh water for sure.

Then the pump is in the head. So as long as the bowl has water in it, the impeller is going to be wet and pumping it out I would think.

Can you post what model head you have?

It's jabsco model # 370100090... Thanks for the replies

I've often wondered what the solution is to having contaminated dock hose to fill your fresh water with. Only the outside of the end of the hose is contaminated, dip it in bleach before using it ? What say you Capt Bill1 ?

Bleach should work. But better to have another hose just for potable water use.

As to the head, while it has two impellers, one metal and one rubber, I don't think rinsing the holding tanks out by flushing the bowl out with fresh water poured into it from time to time will hurt anything.

I always put a few drops of bleach in with each fresh water fill up. Last thing I want is bugs in the potable water

I rinse the bowl with fresh water each time we pump out. I fill the bowl and flush until the tank is nearly full, pump out and repeat so it's actually quite a bit of flushing with the raw water pickup being dry. Usually the second (rinse) tank is fairly clear water. Can I use some white vinegar mid season or will it ruin the odorloss action?

The 37000-series Jabsco has a rubber impeller for the incoming water and either a hard plastic or a metal impeller for the discharge side. Yes, if you run 8 or 10 bowls full of water through it, while no water is comining into the intake pump, you WILL burn up the intake impeller. They'll only last around 30 seconds without water before they're toast!

White vinegar can be added at the rate of one cup (8 oz.) per week - no more!

Thanks Vic.. I'm going to try and rig a large bucket and hose for a pickup for the thru-hull so I can continue rinsing by flushing on dry land. It makes a HUGE difference in clearing things out compared to just filling from the pump out port.

I'm curious:

Why are you flushing the H/T? Winterizing?

I ask, 'cause I never did ( nor considered ) such a thing. I used the boat often, and while I pumped out, I left the thing alone. One good reason was I used K. O. and it was worthwhile allowing the colony to remain, active.

If you run that much water through it, then like Vic said you are more than likely going to burn out your impeller.

I'm not using anything but Odorloss.. I pump out, refill with fresh water and pumpout again.. Helps prevent sludge buildup in the holding tank, it also rinses the hoses out

The solution is to have a potable water rated hose and use it only for potable water, nothing else. Keep it locked or hidden away where no body else can get to it.

Have another hose for other uses.

so what's a little case of the runs gonna hurt anyone?.. it's easier on the mascerator
