Wind

In the valley where I live it seems that it has been blowing for a month or more. Today all the trees are bent and it is really swirling around. When its like this here, it really has to be blowing on the delta. When I am up there and it starts up I have several places to duck into that seem to be protected a bit. Any of you have favorite spots to anchor up when it begins to get out of hand.

I would plan to head east [towards Stockton] and anchor in a slough which runs north/south, since the winds usually come from the west or southwest. The waterways running east/west would have the most chop as well as long reaches such as Big Break and Franks Tract.

Check your charts to find good sheltered places. There are lots and lots of them! Snug up close to the tules but keep a stern anchor out to maintain your protective position. Of course if the wind suddenly dies down, the mosquitoes will eat you alive!!!

I find the best place in the wind is my slip... Actually, Georgianna Slought is pretty decent - it meanders back and forth so there is little reach for the wind to make rolling waves, and best, there are many hight tree lined areas which are good protcetion. Pick a sheltered area, throw out a stern anchor, and nuzzle up to an overhanging tree with a line. Usually pretty safe.
