We're looking at a boat for possible purchase that has a different windlass set up. It's a vertical windlass with a smooth gypsy because much of the rode is line. Can the gypsy be changed out to accommodate 5/16 chain rode which is what I prefer anyway?

Can a smooth gypsy be changed out for a chain gypsy without buying a new windlass?

Likely, but you'll need to check the manufacturer's website &/or customer service. You'll meed the model #.
 
FWIW - my windlass is designed to handle both chain and line . . . just to point out another option.
 
Well, thank you for the responses.  As it turns out my question was premature.  We're going to pass on that boat and continue our search.  It kind of felt like we were trying to overlook too many things that didn't feel right (ie. Anchor windlass).

The hunt is almost as fun.  For what its worth, we're looking for a sport fisher/sedan, 34-40 ft, two staterooms and preferably diesel.  We were hoping for a 37 Tollycraft but open minded to other like boats.
