Use short link chain such as BBB to eliminate kinks

I don't know what is best. I had a. Maxwell that worked well but requires periodic greasing of the vertical shaft

Just changed my windlass yesterday and learned a lot about them. The biggest thing is too size it right. A minimum of 3x the lifting capacity of your anchoring gear. So If your all chain plus anchor weigh 1000lbs you need at least a 3000lb max capacity lift. I installed a Maxwell.

48 Ocean SS, been looking hard for one in the condition I needed. Its in Cape May now. Survey went well last week, just waiting for oil samples to come back. as long as they are ok, should bring it home in a week or so.

Can't speak as to what is best, but I would look to mounting as well as brand. I forget the proper terminology so let's say I prefer oner the deck for ease of maintenance. Mine is under the deck and is a RPITA to get to.

I recommend using a windlass that has a chain gypsy as well as a vertical capstan in Stainless rather than Aluminum. although the capstan may rarely be needed, you will be glad if you need it.

there are several brands available now that also offer a rode counter option, very nice if you are operating it from the bridge.

I had great success using a "GOOD" windlass with 50 feet off BBB and the 300 feet of color coded rode/line. The factory is in NJ and was within 20 miles of my Mainship 40SB. The factory installed the windlass package and I never had any issues with it. I also had an oversized anchor. The entire combination or package worked extremely well for me and still does for the new owner.
