Winter Boat Projects

Walter, that's what I was afraid of, mine aren't cut that way, they're snug now without any carpet in there. I guess yours were made like that to start with.

Then again I have plywood floors (older boat) not fiberglass, so I guess I could open them up with a saw.
 
I didn't have the space around the hatches so my carpet guy bound and overlapped the hatch pieces slightly. He also bound a large area rug which we put over the entire thing. Looks great but Walter's is an even better look.

I saw Marks boat this year, and it did look great, so his way may be the way to go on your boat.
As you can see with my pictures, I have a lot of hatches, good for access, bad for look and wood floors. I would of done wood floors in my boat for that nice look, problem is all the cuts for the hathes, would make it look bad.

The other thing to be considered is how much wood do you want in your boat? In other words, Silverton has a lot of wood in the salon, to much wood gives a cold feeling, you neeed to have a balance IMHO.

Walter, Mark, I have the bounded edge area rug thing in the salon now. That's the only reason the engine hatch edges have not totally frazzled. But I guess next time I'd rather not have that if I can avoid it. It's an extra thing to roll out of the way when accessing the engines, and then half way through whatever you are doing it decides to unroll and hit you in the head. Though it probably does not hurt to have extra padding and sound insulation from the added layer.

I also have a little hatch to get to the bilge up forward, and that one wouldn't really lend itself to the area rug kind of thing because it's in a narrow passage. That's the one that's most annoying right now.
 
Would it be possable to run a router around the hatch and open up the groove to accept the two thicknesses of carpet ??........just a thought.
 
I would love to replace my carpet with teak or some other wood. But then I would also need to replace the vertical carpet, but with what? I think it would look funny with a wood floor and carpet sides…
 
Don, yes, that's what I'm thinking. I have to look at what they rest on. If I turn them into trap doors by removing too much overlap, it won't be so funny.

Yeah......That wouldn't be funny at all.

Hopefully they rest on a substantial structure....so if you routed out 1/2" on both sides it would still be supported.

I'll have to check mine also.
