The boat is a 1985 Carve 3227 with twin Merc 5.7 v-drives.
I had the unfortunate experience of having to replace the Hynautic steering ram and associated connections to the reservalve. The job itself wasn't too hard but locating parts was, and expensive. The ram cost almost $800. Basically, my question is, would it be a good idea to turn the rudders hard over so the entire ram piston is exposed and coat it with something so it won't corrode and if so what product would you recommend.
Thanks,

Larry:
Since noone has responded I will give you some opinion. I don't have experience with hydrolic steering. However, the hydrolic ram I am assuming is similar to the rams used to raise and lower an outdrive. There is a seal where the ram goes into the cylinder. You can't apply anything to the extended ram as it will be wiped off as the ram is retracted into the cylinder. I would just turn the steering so the ram gets retracted all the way into the cylinder. That way it is not exposed.
Hope that helps.

I agree with Eric. I have always "felt" like there was something else I should do but then I look at my trim tabs. The rams are always exposed to the elements and always work fine. I always leave my boat with tabs up as Eric explained about the steering ram to minimize exposure to the elements but I don't even think THAT matters.

Eric, Mike,
I appreciate your advice. And of course now that you both explained it seems obvious but only after having heard from you. I'll take care of that this weekend.

Thanks again and have a Happy Thanksgiving.
