I am running Volvo TAMD 74 diesels in my boat and thinking of switching over to Wix or NAPA gold on all my filters. I know that a lot of people think that it is cheap not to spend a couple more bucks for OEM however I am not just thinking of the price.

I am sure that Volvo is not making thier own filters. That being said, Wix and Napa gold are considered at the top in quality. OEM fuel and oil (2 of each on each engine = 4total)filters will run you around $100.00 per engine. Add the generator and you are looking at over $200.00 for filters. If you go with Wix or NAPA gold you will be in the area of (guessing) $70.00 total.

Again, Wix and NAPA gold are high quality! Isnt it reasonable to consider switching?

Been using wix filters for years on everything. never had any problems.

I've been using NAPA filters on every thing I own for years. I see no problem switching to non-OEM filters.

How many here have lost an engine due to an oil filter not doing its job?

WIX is the OEM for many filter brands that are out there and I have never had an issue with them

I have been using WIX filters on my Volvo TAMD41P.

I checked with my brother who is in the oil/lubricants business and he says they are one of the top brands for quality.

When I gave the guy at Parks Auto the number, he looked it up and said "Volvo marine diesel".

No answers??? Sounds like that is an answer.

We use Wix or Baldwin and have had no issues with either. Mechanics we have spoken with have no issues with either brand.

Thanks, I think I am going to order online enough to do me for a couple of years. Its nice to just pull one off the shelf when you need to.

I have heard of it and I have heard of a cheap oil filter rusting in the moist conditions of a boat bilge and leaking oil.

We're not talking about a Walmart "house brand", we're talking about a well respected brand of filter. I seriously doubt Volvo or Mercruiser makes their own filters, they outsource them.

Wix makes the NAPA filters, FYI.
As for losing an engine due to a cheap filter, who knows all the little things that contribute? If the best filters cost you a couple of bucks more, why not buy them?
