Would you fill up a gasser with 17 POB?

IDK, looks like a pretty big boat for a gasser. But frankly, people around here can get very lax about safety as we only boat a few months out of the year. Easy to forget.

Looks like your average 40ish carver Silverton gasser

Several families were on the boat, about to get ready to head out on the water when the boat exploded while they were fueling, conservation police said.

The vessel was apparently having engine problems and went to marina to refuel. After refuling, they tried to restart the engine when there was an explosion, Sgt. Phillip Wire said.

So, start during fueling, OR known engine trouble, refuel, then start engine.

In any event, sounds like no one opened the hatches for "the nose test"

A sub-optimal way to learn that lesson.

If they were having engine trouble the ride should have been called off. We were always happy to have sprung for the diesel. That boat should have had a fume detector that was screaming at them. Hopefully it was not disabled.

Always had every off the boat while refueling, no exceptions!

Double thumbs up on PSALZER"S post. There are so many places where gasoline can be ignited. Just fuel flowing through the hose generates static electricity that can ignite vapors. There is accounting for your equipment, but you have no knowledge of all the other dispensing equipment, so the only safe way to fuel is to remove everyone from the boat. Yes, even diesel.

I make everyone get off the boat (and take out the trash) while I fuel
