These clips are in the cockpit area of my Mariner. At one time, there were plastic pieces that came over to the hook. I have never been able to figure out the purpose. Can anyone enlighten me? There is one on the transom and one on the transom door but they are at 2 differnt planes. I used to use a piece of rope between the two clips to hold the transom door open but the plastic parts broke.

well...from what I can see...those are fender hooks for a small runabout. they may be used in this case as an anchor form some sort of hold down strap or item like that.
In any case, they're corroded and need to be either removed or replaced (they are still available)

That is a thingamabob. Very common, like the thimityjig.

Does your door latch handle flop over and sit in them to hold the door open???

looks somewhat similar to where the transom door latch catches on mine. for some reason, i've got 2 in the cockpit. one holds the door open. the seocnd is positioned in exactly the same place on the other side of the cockpit. could never figure that one out. maybe they didn't know which side the transom door was going on? maybe they wanted it to look balanced? who knows? maybe on yours they're original and someone changed the mechanism on the door at some point in the past.

one is supposed to have a loop that goes over the hook on the door and holds it open.

The transom door latch will lie up against the clip on the door itself-doing absolutely nothing. The latch will not connect up with the other clip. Kenny, if they are fender clips, the positioning is pointless-I have a swim platform on the other side of the transom that would make em useless. There was no hooks-both clips had a plastic that would seal off the hook on the fitting. I used to have a small line that I could clip into both pieces that would keep the door open fully. Oh well.......the WTF goes on.

Maybe you could replace it with a Perko 0574DP1CHR. They make two sizes, but I did not write the other part number down.

My Carver has the same set up, along with a very light chain. Clip one end to the hook on the door and the other to the hook in the cockpit to hold the door in the open position......never actually had the need to use it as the door stays open quite nicely on its own, and is always locked closed when under way.

Terry....what you're saying makes the most sense. So you have a small chain-is it attached anywhere or do you store the chain away when not being used? Awboater...that part would work but I would have a concern about the standoff causing an injury when the door is not open. You got me thinking though about just replacing it with a hook & eye like I have for my boarding ladder.

cmariner32, the previous owner of the boat simply left the chain attached to the clip on the door, but I found it sometimes got pressed against the door by our cooler (and I didnt want it to scratch the door) so I simply took it off. It's just a matter of choice and convenience.

errr.....correction to m earlier post. i was at the boat this weekend and found that i have two of those thingies as well, but neither catches the door. instead, there is a third thingie that catches the door and holds it open and it's only on the starboard side (where the door opens). if those are fender hooks, can't imagine why they put em where they did.

I have two of these on my 3227. One was broken so I replaced it. I don't know why because I never did figure out what they did.

that's it. i'm buying a bunch and giving them out as holiday gifts this year.

Ok A chain ! I have them on my 36 and wondered the same thing.. I thought some yahoo just screwed something randomly to the side..
