I've got an all chain rode and have it marked every 30 feet. I think some people also get themselves in to trouble by not including the distance from the deck to the water when figuring out how much scope they need.
Like Alka, I too anchor in a spot that gets pretty crowded, but it's also not all that deep so I try to stick to the 7:1 guideline.
