It will be our first time to go to Zach's Bay and we're planning to spend our memorial day weekend there. We need help in navigating how to get there safely. Although we have GPS we feel more comfortable if we can get tips and advise from people who have been there before.

A local lifeguard told me not to swim in Zachs Bay coz a lot of people dump their waste there... is this true?

That's not true......I hope!
Any boater who dumps waste in the bay should be shot!
I think Zachs just gets a little stagnant cuase the entrances are narrow and the bay is large.
I would just hose off well like I would anytime I swim in a shallow bay.

When I was a kid back in the 70's I remember a shark scare in Zach's. Noone would swim there, but htey they found out it was a sunfish and everythign was fine. Still took some people a while to forget it and swim there again.

Speaking of sharks, any shark attacks in the South Shore? I know they are there coz they show them in the news when they shoot from a copter in Jones Beach, but any attacks?

Yes, Don, we are leaving from SS3. Would appreciate if you could give us pointers on how to get to Zach's Bay safely....what to watch out for and how we can avoid those shallow waters. With what we have read so far about Zach's Bay having "dirty" and "stagnant" water, would you recommend we anchor someplace else better?

There are many stories about zachs bay and sewage .....

IT starts with the rest rooms at the band shell... works its way to the boardwalk restrooms...

Original Drawings showing waste line from band shell going out towards the draw bridge.....

Who knows.....

nohst.........real easy........ out of SS3 canal.... head south thru the Lindenhurst cut into the " State Channel ".....then head west ( pass Cedar Beach.... Hemlock Cove.....Gilgo Beach....Tobay Marina )..that will bring you to Zachs Bay on the port side. DO NOT enter at that entrance.....use the westerly entrance.....keep the pole port.....and your in.

Be safe....have fun.
