Hi, I have a 2001 Silverton 330 with twin 5.7L crusaders.

The starboard engine won't start! The port engine is fine.

I've narrowed it down to the circuit which engages the high pressure fuel pump is not turning on via the ignition. Any ideas if there is a fuse somewhere?

What I have done:
- Took ignition out, it's a 3 wire, jumped the red to the purple then temporarily hit the yellow to turn the starter, still no go.
- Put a timing light on cylinder one, light works fine
- Unplugged fuel cell, added power, I can hear the pump and the relive valve pumps fuel.
- When trying to start, I do not hear (or feel) the fuel cell turn on.

This seems to be a fault between the ignition and the fuel cell/fuel pump circuit. Is there a fuse?

thanks in advance!

i had this problem with my mercruiser 454 mpi last spring. Mine had a relay,, which I am still not sure of it was blown, or if I just cleaned up some loose connections when I changed it - because that fixed the problem. I believe it was a delco/gm part, so perhaps crusader is wired the same ? Search for 865202T, and see if you have two of these things next to each other, not far from the coil. I switched mine, and pump began cycling, so I just replaced both of them.

For the merc at least, the fuel pump circuit go s through the ecm. I was worried mine was fried, but it was just dirty connections some where I guess.

Thanks alk. I am also reading *some* of these engines have a low oil cut-off switch wired into the fuel pump circuit.
If there is low oil pressure, the fuel pump will not be energized. I will look for fuse, relay and potentially this low oil safety cutoff switch.

Now that I think of it, the cabling between the box with the relay And the fuel pump had an in,one fuse, which in my case was fine. If I recall all of the low oil cutout, and other ecm related blocks only occur once the engine was running, and would not prevent the familiar sounding cycle up when the ignition is keyed on.

I would pull apart all of the connections in the wire harness, make sure they look clean, and make sure they seat fully and snap into place. That’s what caused my second problem last year with the fuel pump one random day ( while on the water) to quit cycling. I had accidentally left the key on, so while I was repluggong everything, the pump cycled as soon as I found the guilty connection.

My bilge is very clean as are most connections but you never know.
More likely, I knocked the relay out while crawling over the engine getting to the plugs....I just changed cap/rotor/wires/plugs and cleaned the fuel filters.

I will not be able to sleep tonight until I verify the relay and fuse are ok.

Yes there should be a multi-fuse holder on aft top of the engine I believe . 1 will be for fuel pump. There will also be a fuel pump relay and it or its harness connector could be bad. On my 2003 5.7 Crusader MPIs I once had a very slightly bent pump relay connector pin that caused a mysterious intermittent hesitation for 2 yrs and finally caused a no-start situation at the dock.
The Serious Wiggle Test with the ign to ON revealed the location of the culprit when the pump suddenly energized. Pin straightened . ran fine.

Also have replaced several fuel pump fuses , (and eventually both pumps) on that engine due to electrical terminal corrosion on them ( spray from RW pump leak) .

I found the relays, for me they were mounted under the main circuit breaker. When I say mounted, I really mean it, they were tough to unplug and tough to remove. Swapped both with the other engine and it worked! Buying two new relays today, one for spare.

I did notice a bent pin in one of the relays but how is that possible? It slips in pretty tight so I assume it happened when I removed it. FYI my part number is:
- crusader R130012
- mercury 865202T
- Sierra SIE-18-5851

When my relay had to be switched, I picked up the replacement at NAPA, as it's a standard GM part. It is the same relay for fuel pump, and the one mounted next to it for ignition. The napa number I am seeing now for a interchange on 865202T is MPE AR153SB. Not sure if that's the one I bought, but I know I went into NAPA last fall with the merc part numbers for my relays and ignition module, and walked out with the replacements.

Thanks alk but I would be concerned about ignition proof...although it looks identical to the ones I found (albeit different color)
I'm purchasing from a local marina supply and expecting to pay $30 so I can splash tomorrow.
I also ordered a spare from ebay for $15.

I’m pretty sure my parts guy told me that the only ignition part on these motors that could ( and should) be purchased with marine rating was the distributor cap; rest was off the shelf delco parts. Are your fuses marine rated, or just regular auto ? (:

but if you can find one locally, no need to go the Napa route.

But fuses don't move, a relay is magnetic a switch, I'd be careful.

Having said that, I sourced one locally, a much cheaper looking knockoff for $38.00 and ordered a crusader from e-bay for $15.

I will use the knockoff to lauch tomorrow and then it will be the "get me home" spare.

A year later, I’m still relieved when I hear the fuel pump cycle when I turn the key - never even noticed it before last summers two incidents.

Yep fortunately I was aware of that noise so I diagnosed the issue in seconds. Then had to learn there were relays from guys like you. Good stuff! Thanks and have a great weekend.

Waytogo on the fix, Walshie! [:-thumbu]

Happy boating[:-captain] once again.
