The only ‘Bad’ I have heard about Volvo diesels is the cost of parts
An IPS Boat?

No Andy, not IPS, whats the deal with maintenance, seems like diesels have a lot of filters.

yes they have a lot of filters but that is really all they need, clean fuel. I'll second the parts cost story on volvo. Diesel parts are expensive but Volvo is noted for being at the top. They hold a lot of lube oil so filters are big and the oil gets pricy. Doing your own work will help. OTOH I havent heard any horror stories about Volvo in a very long time.

Other than cost of parts I haven't read anything negatve about the D-9's. In fact I haven't heard much negative about any Volvo diesel.
Bill

Filterbarn.com has the lowest prices on name brand filters, by far. Still, they ain't cheap, and putting 5 gallons of oil in per engine at each change starts to add up...

Is there a Volvo Mech in your area? That seems to be a huge complaint among Volvo owners around here. Cat's, Merc/Cummins, no problem. Volvo.........not so much. Travel costs will kill you.

Gas, diesel may be different, but that would be good !!!

Walter once you go diesel you will never go back!

Volvo makes a great motor I don't see a down side here.

Best of luck!

Dave I have heard that before, but got to tell you, from what I have read on other sites and here, maintenance seems to be more involved and more costly than a gasser. I received a maintenance manual for these motors, assuming other brands would be the same, holy crap man, seems like a lot of work and cost to maintain these puppy's.

I could see if you use the boat a lot, 200 hours or more a season, but when I see you need to do xyz in either 600 hours or 6 months, that scares me.

Just wondering, you guys that have diesel and do the maintenance yourself, what are your annual costs to maintain your diesel motors?

On a positive note, the common theme about Volvo Diesel motors is they are very solid, and yes those that I have chatted with tell me parts and repairs are much more expensive than other diesel brands. More expensive repair costs does not scare me, the re-accruing maintenance costs do though. Maybe I am overreacting to what I am seeing, this is why I am asking about what it costs you guys that have diesel motors and maintain them yourselves.

Just trying to get a grip on owning a diesel boat and whether or not diesel is worth it for me.

Thanks again for all your help

Walter

I can't speak for Volvo but I can tell you that I do 99% of all the maintenance on my Cats and I have been spending less overall then I did for my Merc IOs I had to pay someone else to deal with the out drives.

I hold 7 gallons of oil per motor and about 2 in the genny. I have one oil filter per motor and two fuel filters I have 11 zincs per motor (I believe the Volvo only has three). I change the oil in the fall and send out for analyzing. I change the Trans oil every other year that's about all I do. This is not a lot of money in the over all scope of boating. Two years ago someone asked what I spend a year on boating I made the mistake of adding up this number, I will never do that again so I don't know exactly what I spend but I think you would be surprise and happy.

What kind of boat are we talking about? if it's 40' or larger there simply is no other way to go.

Blowup one time and you will wish you had diesels. Take it from someone that knows!

Again best of luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks Dave,
Just looking to get educated before I pull the trigger, the boat I am looking at is a 2007 0r 2008 Silverton 45C.

Walter

Ours are Cummins, so not exactly the same as Volvos... but for each engine ours is like this, generally once/year:

- a spin-on oil filter, ~$53 (Volvo uses more filters)
- a spin-on coolant filter, ~$12
- 4.5 gals oil, ~$125
- a spin-on secondary fuel filter, ~$16
- a water pump impeller, ~$83
- 3 zincs, ~$12 each

Racor (primary fuel filter/fuel-water separator) and AirSep service tends to be just cleaning or draining (water), with new parts required only occasionally.

Coolant replacement is also generally a longer-term thing, every couple years or more.

Marine gear service would probably be similar to gasoline installations: change oil and filters.
