$225 a mile, this what sea tow tried to charge me to move my 53 footer 10nm to the yard....

$350 an hour should have been two hours to cover the 10nm plus another hour for a second boat going up the. The Miami river (unlike towboatUS they don't want to tow up river over 50' with a single boat on the hip) so I figure about $1000 plus 45' return to the dock

I ve done the trip many times and at 5kts it's 2 hours... in fact I towed my 26' sailboat the exact same route at 4 kts in 2 1/4 hours two days ago

Needless to say I told them No Thanks

As to why I have to pay, its classic failure to read the fine print... when I got the sea tow Professional Mariner membership 9 years ago, I was told verbally it covered dock to dock on the primary vessel listed on the card. Well it doesn't.... i should have re read the fine print every renewal. My fault. But $225 a mile ... no way!

I hear towboat gold is dock to dock and better.
My friend got a 8 hour tow with them back to his dock for free!

Yeah .. as I said I should have checked ahead but frankly I figured 10 miles, couple of hours... WRONG!

so it begs the question on why the tow is required

Because the boat is going to the yard for repower. One of the detroit is dead and both are disconnected and ready to come out

$350.00 per hour should get you a Real tug, professional crew and a $10 million (+) liability policy to work as directed. Why fool around with outboard powered skiffs masquerading as towing vessels?

One issue is that all these guys are very busy post hurricsne towing and salvaging hundred of boats, all paid by insurance companies with no incentive to save money. Same goes with owners of damaged boats... teyd otn care about minimizing damage because the insurance is paying anyway. There are many boats here with rubrail damage that owners havent bothered securing to avoid further damage. sailboats with unsecured furled sail flapping in the beeze. Some owners are telling adjusters their boats are taking on water just ao they can get free tows and storage at local yards while their boats would be perfectly fine being repaired in their slips.

Its just like healthcare costs... patients dont care because insurance is paying. Get ready for sticker shock comes renewal

Funny you mention healthcare as another example of overinflated pricing. Just thinking the same thing. Pascal, It Sucks that you did SO well with the Lazzara, minimized the damage to the Hatt, and now this uncalled for, Absurd Thing. My sympathy won't pay the bills, but you have it, sincerely, Shipmate!

IIRC my towboat us policy allowed towing from my home dock to a repair yard but I haven't checked in a long time. Also individual contracted tows were exorbitant and something to avoid.

The so-called "Gold" plan is supposed to. Subject probably to an ink barrel worth of fine print.

Pascal;

Have you followed tony's recommendation and serviced the after coolers before installation? I wish I had done it when I got my boat but at that time I didn't know.

Will their be a big weight savings with the new engines?

No, haven't done anything in the motors. They're still on the factory pallets at the dealer What kind of service are you referring to?

Total weight savings are over 3000 lbs... it s not just the engines but the gears too, Alisons weight 3 times what the ZFs weight

Look at sbmar.com for details on lubing the coolers

Other suggestions:

The Cummins repair manual and parts list books are a great help

The standard exhaust mixing elbow is only meant for down pointing applications. used pointing up it will eventually leak into the engine.

Get a couple of allthread connecting nuts to use for zinc removal. I forget the size. The zincs corrode a bit and then only the plug comes out.
Those all thread nuts can screw onto the stuck zinc and allow you to wiggle it free.

Cs use sca in the coolant and cunmmins shops sell test strips to measure the concentration.

The seawater pumps will last a long time if used frequently. If they sit lot the ceramic seals seem to stick and they start to leak.

I fould it easier to remove the pump to change impellers and inspect/change internal parts. Flip over the end plates if they get scored.

Tony replaces a lot of new pumps with his own design and might make you a good deal on a new removed spare.

The best source for parts is Tonys shop. Use the CPL and S/N and they will get you the correct part. Local shops don't seem to do as well on correct part ID. His prices seemed good to me and it came to my door.

Best engines I ever owned so simple anyone can fix them.

And dont forget to prop to 2700 RPMs

You will enjoy them. have fun.
