5260 First Look

Sorry rommer. I do think that was civil, and sincere. But I get your point.

I'll edit my post to be less critical.

Rommer,
i mostly really like the Cruisers line but if you want to talk about an ugly Cruisers it's not hard....the 447 and the 497 decidedly not appealing to me. I think they hired the same designer as regal
!!!

To be honest, the 447 is on our short list of possible upgrades in the future if Regal doesn't get going on a bigger sedan bridge. It's far from perfect but the wife liked it.

thats from the melted icecream school of design

That Cruisers is almost as bad as the Regal, but the lines at least are just a little bit more consistent.
But yes, that's one of the original Woody Woodpecker designs.

For flawed proportions though, it hardly gets as bad as the Silverton Motoryacht models.

I reduced my screen size to 1024 x 768 and I see what you are talking about in that there is small bit of scrolling even with the pictures at 800 max. width. I doubt Les will rewrite the forum code to word wrap the name but perhaps he will shorten the name if Regal Marketing is agreeable.

Another possible solution is to use a smaller font, with firefox hit ctrl with the - key and the font gets smaller, ctrl + makes it bigger. Eliminates the scroll on my machine.

I can shrink my screen to 75% but then everything else is too small. I dont see any reason to chnge the user name as that is what Recal wants but if perhaps you can edit it to be on two lines similar to Best Mate's.

This is a dramatic new express design concept for Regal. And probably not unexpectedly, it is getting strong reaction both ways. I'm guessing they wanted to make a big splash and create a buzz with this design. If so, it worked. It's hard to get a good perspective on it from the pictures so I'll hold judgment till I see it in person. Thanks to Regal for reaching out to preview this new model on our forum.

yeah, the cockpit table is a minor issue, easily fixed obviousy.

as to the size of the ER, I'm skeptical... whether connected to IPS or a V, you cna't shrink a diesel engine and the IPS is set right behind the engine. The room saving feature of IPS comes from moving the engines all the way aft which allows for more living space. This boat takes advantage of this as you can see from teh floorplan and teh location of the aft most porthole.

now, when you look at the space aft of that porhole and remove the volume used up by the dinghy garage, there isn't a lot of room left to fit two big diesel, the IPS, the genset, the air cons, etc...

bruce, 1024 wide is more or less the standard/minimum these days, so 800 pixesl wide pictures fit nicely considering the left margin of the forum layout.

yes i understand and agree the pix is not the problem it is the wide left frame caused by the long name on a single line.

In effect Pascal, Volvo has shrunken diesel engines. They're compact and sit low in the ER, and there's nothing more than a drive elbow and some hoses behind the engine. The space savings is very impressive.

Volvo calls them an IPS 400 or IPS 500 but that doesn't mean it is a 400 or 500 horse power engine. The number implies the HP size needed in a conventional setup to equal the performance of the IPS. Makes the engine space needed even smaller. (OK not much but some!)

you cant shrink a 6 cylinder engine that much... and if you look at IPS pictures / drawings they take up as much space behind the engine as Vee drive does in front, when you take into accoutn the footprint of the drive as well as all the plumbing and exhaust hoses...

if you look at the location of the rear porthole and visualize the engine/drive space, plus a genny and the air conditioners... I wonder how cramped it is in there.

but since builders NEVER show pictures of their engine rooms... and since most boating rags care more about drink holders... :-)

i dont buy this pitch. The smaller engines are cheaper and that offsets the high cost of the volvo drives. There is no way that 20 to 30% reduction in HP will yield the same performance.

Seriously Pascal, it's not a myth! They take up less space. When you step into an ER with IPS, the first thing that strikes you is how low and level the engines are sitting. Think about it - they're not perched on top of transmissions or sitting high atop tall stringers. The gears are below the hull, the engines themselves are not only compact but as Rommer pointed out, they're smaller than their performance (and model designations) suggest.

As far as "footprint" - probably so, but the shaft and hoses sit much lower and take up much less space than does a whole tranny in a conventional setup.

Lazzara's 75 LSX has 4 IPS systems tucked into an ER that's smaller than that of boats 20 feet smaller. You're right about pictures - we were scolded for taking pics on the LSX, but the ER was so impressive that it was worth it.

Pascal here is a shot of the engine room:

The genny is to the right and forward you can see the ladder access from the day hatch.
and yes the performance claims of the IPS are correct, the fuel savings may not be as pronounced, but the speed is without a doubt there as any here who have been on an IPS boat will confirm. If you search the Regal forum here you will see a posting of the performance data for Regals with and without IPS.

Certainly looks neat yet i don’t see any room forward or at the sides or lower to access stuff.

i'm not disputing the fuel savings... although i think volvo's exagerated pre launch claims didn't do them any good. Speed, yeah maybe... :-)

neat ER from i can see altough genny access seems tight, it sits very close the engine, must not be fun to change an impeller or belt after a run...

i hope these diamond plate are easy to pull at the front, since the main's pump, belts, etc... are probable there.

would also like to see the strainers, racors, batteries, etc... :-) yeah i know... i'm a pain !

BUT... i disagree about how compact IPS are... look at the space used behind the engines ! far longer than a conventional tranny or vee... having the engines a little higher with vees isnt' a bad thing to service the engines.

Hang on a second....enclosed bridge and HVAC is optional?!?!?!?....Am I missing something? I have been on those large gray things from north of the Arctic Circle to the equator. IMHO, optional HVAC is lame.
