America's Cup - San Francisco 2013 - Pictures

I left the PIER and headed West through the transit zone under the Golden Gate then back East through the transit zone. One of the SFPD boats came along side me right off Marina Greens and asked me where I was headed. I told him I was headed to the Golden Gate Bridge and he just said not to stop in the transit lane.

I got the pictures of NZ rounding the mark on our way back East through the transit zone.

that's what I thought from the camera angle. First time I've seen Larry's yacht out there during a race
They still have not really had a real race yet - just mechanical failures. I guess they are doing 2 makeup races today

all 3 races thus far have had boat problems that resulted in runaway races
this is not looking good from a racing perspective

That is the safety/reduce boat!? What a pis poor way to have to retreave people from the water. At the very least it appears they have the space between the engines to have a proper boarding ladder with steps and hand rails that they could swing down into the water for people to walk up.

And what happens if some one is incapacitated, they just drag them in over the side?

Great pictures by the way. Thanks for continuing to post them.

Bill, maybe they tow anyone who is incapacitated behind safety boat!

Yeah those cats are superfast. The crashes are spectacular, but I do miss the close in side by side racing of the monohulls. I am no sailor but it seems to be all about speed & very little tactics of stealing the other guys wind & such.

problem so far is they haven't had a situation where tactics mattered yet. The last 3 races all had 1 of the boats have a breakdown. Hoping it gets better

Now it s all about the start and the first leg, whoever leads there will be hard to pass. I also think the current limit the number of options on such a short course,

In the past the pre start lasted longer so there were more opportunity to duke it out, unfortunately now it s just two minutes

I think you are right, but hoping that if 2 boats are close in speed, they will have some excitement on the course. I don't understand why they went to a shorter course for the finals

We went out both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was beautiful, but they had to cancel the 2nd race due to wind above limit. NZ set a new race speed record at 54mph.
NZ advances to the AC Finals with their win on Sunday. Unfortunately, the fog never lifted and in fact got worse during the race. Could hardly see anything. I'm surprised they raced in the conditions.

In terms of the transit zone on the south side of the course, I think they are limiting to commercial. We tried to go that way and said we were headed to the GG Bridge, but told us to go around the other way.

the fog got worse after I took this

Sunday was a very foggy day without much wind (for SF Bay). Still nice to see the final race.

You can barely see NZ through the fog.

Adjusted the contrast a bit on this which "hides" some of the fog.

Italy heading toward the finish line. Nice effort, too bad the racing wasn't closer.

Pretty stupid of CalTrans to close the Bay Bridge just as the America's Cup finals are beginning!!!!

I noticed that in the Sac Area, the America's Cup races are being shown Saturday Sep 7th, on KCRA, Ch 3. They are probably on a SF area channel as well. Maybe Charlie and I will show up on TV!!! LOL

The Finals do not start until next weekend. I've seen my boat in the TV replays a couple times.

Yes, Sep 7 is next weekend. But folks are in the area for America's Cup and have to endure the bridge closing.

Next weekend the 49ers, Giants and America's Cup is happening. Even with the bridge open it will be a tough commute.

On Sunday, all at virtually the same time! At least the Giants game on Saturday is at night
