Wreck removal has become the norm due to environmental and liability concerns. If left in place, the vessel's Owners and P&I Club would have continuing unlimited liability. Talk about an "Attractive Nuisance". Best to cut your loses and spend the green to get the wreck out of the way at a known cost. I'm surprised some connected Italian Entrepreneur (is there such a thing?) didn't purchase the wreck once it was up right and make a waterfront Disco/Night Club complex out of the upper decks that are above the water. Don't discount the tow to the wrecking yard. There could be an "unforeseen event" and she might still slip under the sea into the deepest point on the tow and save the owner's amd underwriters the cost of scrapping her.
