did somebody say watch your wake?

So we have been told that the owner is a "stand up guy" however we don't know who was running the boat and if it was a hired captain what has been done about him.

We also don't know what if anything the authorities are doing about it. In other words the owner and captain is likely skating all legal action.

Please let me know if this boat is observed heading for the Great Lakes.

" For anyone interested. This yacht is currently in Newport RI at Newport Marine."

If all the preceeding posts are credible.....and there WAS in fact a Coast Guard Vessel waiting for it to show up at some point....and the Boat "Blew past them".....then I would think that THEY would be interested in knowing where it is?

If I'm reading that map and the coordinates correctly they made it from Baltimore to NYC in 12 hours. No wonder he was tossing a big wake!!!

I still find it intriguing that on the day of the incident, the tracking goes dead shortly after exiting the C&D canal, then suddenly activates again just as the boat is coming in to NYC. Why would that be?

While people are being made whole financially, there is no news regarding any explanations, apologies or accountability. Hopefully someone can chime in here and back up the guy who told me they were "stand-up" people. After more than 2 weeks, it's getting tougher to believe.

The USCG is on the case.

unbelievable!

well, i guess it is believable, if the captain can't understand the dangers of his own wake, then he cant' be responsible enough to know how his valves are supposed to be set.

I hope they got a fine for that one...

They created far more sh!t on the C&D.

I recieved a message purporting to give me the captain's name. When I Google him, I get hits for Facebook and LinkedIn where he lists his occupation as a captain. Is there any way to confirm that he is the right guy before publishing the name? I'd hate to have the wrong guy's facebook page inundated with the messages he's likely to get...

Maybe contact him, say you have a 100' boat and need a Captain. Ask him if he is available and what vessals he recently Captain'ed. Ask him if he has any experience on ICW and C&D!!!

That is a shocker about the valve. Makes you wonder how many other boats do this!! I don't recall ever seeing huge yachts at the pumpout! I guess he must of dumped in ocean and didn't close it after dumping, but that is careless.

you'd be surprised how many times i got on boats and found unsecured seacocks or Y valves part of my preflight... Problem is that if i get boarded and a valve isnt' secured, it's my butt on the line...

in this case, the fact that the report says "Y valve" indicates that at least one head was set for overboard discharge. Obviously we dont' know how that boat is plumbed but usually dont' have a Y valve on the holding tank discharge. If the captain had emptied the tank off shore, it's a seacock that would have been left open, not a Y valve. Again, unless the boat plumbing uses a Y valves in the holding tank discharge.

So the only action taken is "Y Valve closed by First Mate"? That's it?

Bob

My old boat had a Y valve on the discharge.
Y1 allowed the discharge to flow to the waste pumpout on the deck.
Y2 allowed the discharge to flow to the seacock.
To dump, you had to move Y and open seacock.

My boat has 2 heads with 1 "Y" valve in the engine room. The "Y" will set the discharge to either one of the two heads but you can't set it to no head. It MUST be set to one or the other. Of course, there is a seperate panel switch to turn on the pump out, there is another pull switch that must be activated below and there is a third thing of opening the SeaCock to actually discharge the waste. Maybe the "Y" valve didn't have a closed position on this other yacht?

"I still find it intriguing that on the day of the incident, the tracking goes dead shortly after exiting the C&D canal, then suddenly activates again just as the boat is coming in to NYC. Why would that be?"

This is why:

The "marinetraffic.com" site gets its data from a network of volunteer shoreside people/organizations that maintain AIS transponder readers for their own use and then agree to make their local observations available to the "marine traffic.com" web site. So what you actually are seeing is a lack of volunteer data submitters in the area (s) that don't show any activity.

Thanks, CaptJon. I had (incorrectly) assumed that there was some kind of full-time satellite connection.

My old set up had a Y valve and a thru hull. To do the dock discharge you put the Y valve in 1 position to go to the macerator the and then the through hull the other direction.
With my new Hold-N-Treat controls the Y valve was eliminated as was the direct discharge. A new discharge fitting was installed in the tank for pump outs the other goes directly to the Maceraoror that feeds the PuraSan that is controlled by opening the seacock/through hull, the old macerator breaker must be turned on and then I have to get the key hanging near the main fuse panel and turn the Hold-N-Treat on. There is no longer a way I can direct discharge the boat. In a pinch I could plumb around the PuraSan and rewire the macerator that feeds the PuraSan but that would take some messy work that I am not prepared to do.

Not to defend the "captain", but it is very poorly marked in the C&D canal about 5mph, although common sense tells you to slow down seeing boats in a marina.

Hopefully the owner can make good and the captain fired.

I pitty those that speed through the C&D now, maybe use the picture of the captain behind bars "Slow Down, This Could Be You!"

Good luck guys!

So far, it appears that the owner is indeed in the process of making good. Enquiring minds are dying to find out about the captain, though. The dockmaster at the Chesapeake Inn told me last weekend that the boat was hailed on the VHF and informed of what had happened, but responded with something like "Thanks for the info" and carried on even after my friend chased him down. Second-hand but believable, based on what has surfaced so far. The next week or so will determine a lot as to how things eventually work out.

Let me know if she gets back to FL in the ICW. I don't want to be anywhere near the water when she passes through.
