Does anyone here own a Gulfstar trawler?

Billy, maybe your boat does not have a cored bottom, but I do recommend paying attention to any input Dave (captddis) has for you. He's a professional in the TPA area and has been of great assistance to me, indirectly, on the Hatteras Owners Forum and directly to many members there. Very pragmatic and knowledgeable, no BS. Obviously he knows the Gulfstar/Lazzara story well. Dave, I hadn't noticed you were on BE, good to have you here.

George, Thanks for the kind words. You are making me blush. I did deliver a few new Gulfstar/Vikings around 1990 and have worked on my share of Gulfstars. They were all built here in St Pete. Almost every boatyard around here has an ex Gulfstar employee.
I have been a member here for quite a while, but I usually just lurk.

Dave as George said I do appreciate your comments. I have checked as well as the surveyor the deck is cored the sides and hull are not cored but thick fiberglass so I'm lucky in that respect. There is only minor blistering in 2 small spots.
Alk, yes Michael from Essex is a great guy so far.
Fuel was finally delivered this morning. We are looking for the launch and sea trial early next week. This isn't a knock but they sure move slower on the Chessie then in South Jersey!
I'll have to get used to it.

Hey Billy !

Wow, congrats on the new boat !

I know you will be really pleased with the diesels and all they represent.

Welcome to the "club" !

I can't wait to see the upgrades you will be doing to Wireless Two !

Hopefully the sea trial won't be problematic. This boat seems like it was really cared for up until 2 years ago. She was properly put to sleep so I'm looking forward to waking her up.

Bill, I am very much looking forward to seeing her once you get her ready. When I set foot on her all I saw was a well made vessel with a ton of potential. If this goes badly I take every word back :-)

The surveyor called me and asked that I tell him if I'm backing out because he wants the boat if I don't. I think that was a very strange call and no I didn't find him from the sellers broker.
Kurt I'm pretty confident the sea trial will go as planned (in my mind). I think this boat's a very basic sound platform with ton's of potential. The age of this vessel doesn't scare me either.

Bill,

A friend shot me this thread and I wanted to weigh in - I have a 1981 Gulfstar 38, and am a member of the Gulfstar owners association. Go on FB and check it out (here is the link if rules allow: https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/gulfstarboats/) A lot of us post info and updates there. Gulfstars are great boats, I LOVE mine. Very nicely appointed, solid, built well. Sadly, I think some of Gulfstar's failure as a company was to put too much money into quality, then sell it too close to margin and call it the 'most affordable boat in its class' at the time. When I've had to do work on her, she is a breeze and everything is laid out really well with really good access to most systems. Drop me a PM and I'd be happy to give you any other info you may need to make an informed decision, but so long as you don't have any de-lam, water intrusion, etc, I think you are making a good buy.

Tim thanks but I don't do Facebook.
I think it's going to be an ideal boat for my wife and I.
We will be cruising the ICW once it's officially mine.
I have a load of parts, batteries, a true Sine Wave Inverter, (3) 200 watt solar panels, a wind generator, the solar and wind charge controller, Balmar's smart battery meter, KVH equipment and 2 Edson masts and fixtures to hang the outside antennas, GMR-18xHD Radar and KVH equipment on in my shop.

Bill,

Congrats! My parents had the same boat in the early 80's & loved it! In the 5 years they owned it, I don't recall a single major issue & certainly the only boat they ever owned with such great, trouble-free engines.

Heading up & down the ICW, I see ones quite frequently & most still look in great shape. I fact we anchored next to one last night.

I helped them sell it & recall the surveyor finding many areas of the cored deck around various fittings - lots of wet & rotting balsa coring - which almost lost the deal. So even if your surveyor found it mostly good, I would make it a 2 - 3 year project to pull every fitting, properly backseal the coring & reseal everything. It would be a sizable job but well worth it in the long run. Besides protecting the coring, you're eventually going to get water leaking thru the old sealant into the headliner.

Congrats again!

Thanks Russ we found some moisture near the Windlass that will be addressed. I agree with you about re-sealing all the fittings.

Too far away and the one I'm looking at while not as nice has potential for way less money.

Well I actually signed up for FB. That's pretty nice group of Gulfstar owners with some nice upgrades.
Thanks Tim.

Or guys I locked up 20 plus years ago might find me to see what I'm eating for lunch?

I don't see the value in FB for the sort of threads we run here.

I suggested to Les that he start a trawler section. IMO the reality is that trawlers have all the same systems and problems as planing boats but the trawler folks seem to think they are somehow different so why not accommodate them?.

Trawler people read slower. Haven't you ever gotten on boatered and found it took a long time to load? That's because a trawler was reading the same thread and you had to wait for him to finish the page.

Some people don't know nothing about the interweb!

To think I thought only Richard Rawlins (the hot rod hunter) from "GMG" called it the Interweb! You mean trawler owners call it that as well? <:>
