For anyone who's built their own boat....

Wellllll I thought the F glass union of the two sides at the prow split.
This photo looks like an unfinished project.
I thought the first post up there was the Fiberglass had split. Sorry for getting everyone all shook up!

Well Thud, if it's gonna happen it's gonna happen to me! :-)

I'll stick that piece in there for ya next weekend! :-)

Rick you've already done more work on that boat than I've done on all the boat's Ive ever owned.
Little crack like that can wait a week or two.

Thnx Thud. I think! *hehehe*

Anyhow, I hope everyone had a joyful and relaxing Easter long weekend. It certainly was for us and after a belly full of ham & turtle pie I struggled to haul my butt out to the shed this morning. It's still cold & damp and raining. Too cold to do any epoxy work. I had the heater on in the shed and could only get it up to about 10 degs C.

I did cut a few missing pieces for the side panels and trued up the thruster tube so it's ready to be glassed in. Other than that I just puttered around.

Here's hoping it warms up a bit soon! I can hear the travel lift at the marina likely launching boats! :-)

Spent some quality time with my belt sander this morning and made some progress.

Side panels glued on stbd side.

Port side will get done this afternoon if I can find enough clamps! :-)

Thruster tube glued in. There was a few small missing pieces on the leading edge of the keel. Cut and glued those into place. Took a lot of sanding this area. It was mis-cut by the CnC and the kerfs allowing the panel to bend are on the outside. Just a lot more filling and sanding to get it smooth. The other side is has the kerfs on the inside.

Once that filler has set up it can be sanded again *sigh*. Then it's onto the keel.

I'll make it look purdy later (with the belt sander) :-)

Puttered around at some other jobs today too. Freakin' cold and damp though. My knees are achin' somethin' fierce!

There was a big gap in the tail end of the keel Thud. You didn't see that one! I filled and gooped it too!

Pretty much the rest of the time I spent with various sanders on the sides and transom getting them ready for fiberglass.

Tomorrow it's back up to work on the keel. Plenty to do there before any fiberglass work starts.

If you fill all those holes it'll hold water when you turn it.
The Big Blue Big Top is narrow at the top. So the boat'll never go back into that Big Top!

You'll be out there in the weather, with your Sou'wester and rubber gear on....

It'll fit Thud...... "runnin' for his tape measure" .......... it'll fit I think! :-)

Nor easter got us last night. 4" of snow on the ground this morning. I wonder how many ijjits will hit the roads this morning on their summer tires! Thank Gawd for Jeeps! :-)

My expert epoxy glue mixer upper was down with the flu this weekend and I was all by myself yesterday in the shed. I managed to get the hull/keel joins filleted with nice big radius fillets. I'll need these because I'm using 34 oz fiberglass instead of two layers of lighter glass. The heavier stuff doesn't like to bend around corners very well. Problem with larger radius fillets is the amount of glue they take. I was up and down that ladder a dozen times. Ohhhhhhh my aching knees!

I have to cut one more hole in the hull for the depth sounder transducer. That part has to be a solid glass section. Standby....

Sorry about the infrequent updates. Been slacking off big time. Got Netflixated last week! :-)

Ya know what they say eh?

If ya can't take the heat, get outta the kitchen! Or in this case, get offa the boat!

I couldn't take it much more than 10 mins up there at that temp! I'm sure it was actually a few degs warmer which would make it damn near 100 degs F! I taped those seams 3 hrs ago and they're rock hard now! Normally the epoxy takes 15-18 hrs to cure to that hardness.

Anyhow, it's progress. Small steps all add up to somethin'! :-)

Stay cool my friends!

43.5C or 110F by any standard that's warm!

I'm gonna go crawl into the freezer for a bit! :-)

Mimic Panels

As some of you know I like gizmo's. I especially like making my own gizmo's (see earlier on elec dist panel). I don't do it for economic reasons but more to just keep my hands busy in the loooong coooold Canadian winters!

So my next project is a Mimic Panel that'll show me what major pieces of equipment are online and working.

mimic-1.jpg

I apologize for the crappy picture. All I could get was a screencap from FrontPanel Express software.

What I've got on the panel so far are:

Nav Lights (P&S, aft white, masthead white)
Anchor Light
Aft Bilge Pump
Fwd Bilge Pump
Crash Pump (1 Amber & 1 Red)
Diesel Heater
H/W Heater
F/W Circ Pump
E/R Blower
A/C Circ Pump
Bow Thruster (1 Amber & 1 Green)
Windlass

Some of them have two LED's, Amber for Energized and Green for operating. There'll be only 1 Red LED and that's for the crash pump in operation.

I was thinking adding a switch to turn off all the LED's. Am I missing anything else?

Good idear Rick. I think I'll put the icebox on there with an alarm buzzer! :-)

Thns jrpar. I got the macerator and the shower sump. E/R isn't really big 'nuff for it's own lights I don't think.

Gave it a bit more thought last night. Funny how you dream about this stuff when you should be dreaming about exotic beauties on sandy beaches in the tropics!

Forgot to add, the panel is 10" X 4" x 3mm anodized aluminum.

Here's the latest iteration

mimic-3.jpg

I've added a switch to interrupt all the grounds (except the crash pump) which will darken the panel.

The two rectangles are the Ancor pin terminal strips that'll be mounted on the back of the panel. One thing I learned from making the elec dist panel is you have to pay as much attention to the back as you do the front.

I see it working so all lights out until something gets turned on from the dist panel or dash switches or float switches. (except the crash pump). So normal condition is only the crash pump "amber' energized LED will be lit. When the pump activates the "red" LED will light as well as a buzzer.

The bow thruster and windlass will work similarily to the crash pump except the "green" LED will light when they're in operation.

I see this going in the overhead console on the Mate's side of the main cabin.

The panel CnC cut is about $60 US. Terminal strips $20. LED's $40. Switch $5, for a total of about $125 give or take a few sheckles. Should make a good winter project to keep my hands busy!
